Saving Aida

Saving Aida On June 2nd 2010, Aida was diagnosed with a cyanotic Congenital Heart disease (Severe Ebstein’s Anomaly, Pulmonary Atresia) She was given four days to live.

On Saturday April 2010 Gillian Dupigny experienced the incredible joy of bringing two wonderful

children into this world, Aida and Akira. But well before she could have settled from the euphoria of being with her first borns, doctors broke the

bad news that any parent would dread hearing. Gillian and her husband, Lester, were told that Aida has been diagnosed with a severe case of Ebstein’s

A

namoly, a rare heart condition. The shocking and painful discovery came three days after birth. According to Gillian, in her own account of that painful journey, “It was not until 13th April, 2010 during

a routine examination of Aida, a heart murmur was discovered. She was kept at the hospital under

observation and was discharged the following day. We thought that all was well. We were wrong, approximately 3 weeks later Aida was readmitted to the

hospital. Things started to take a different turn. Aida was slowly losing her strength. On June 2nd 2010

she went into cardiac distress and was airlifted to a children’s hospital in Martinique. She was examined

by a team of specialists, and was diagnosed with a cyanotic Congenital Heart disease (Severe Ebstein’s

Anomaly, Pulmonary Atresia). The doctor told us there’s no hope, that our little daughter would be

dead within 4 days. His words were “I know what I’m saying, I wish there was something else I could say

to you, she is not going to make it so you should move on with your lives together with your other

daughter (Akira Hope Dupigny).”

Today a small committee made up of Gillian’s co-workers in the Nelson’s Dockyard has been formed to

move this cause forward. On Friday May 1, after a long and arduous search to find the institution that would best help Aida,

Gillian received a medical opinion and treatment options from the Boston Children’s Hospital. The BCH

advises that she would need US$187,687.00 for a combination of services to correct her abnormality. This does not include airfare to Boston, accommodation and subsistence while in Boston and airfare to

Barbados for VISA purposes. This accounts for an additional US$10,394.80. A fund has been started at the Dockyard branch of Antiguan bank, ECAB, in the name of Aida’s mother,

Gillian Dupigny. The account number is 121000719

We are seeking your support in helping us to reach this target so that Aida can remain with us and grow

up to be the wonderful promise that she is and to be the delightful inspiration that her mother is to all

those with whom she has come in contact.

Last night was a difficult and frightening moment for me. Aida had an episode that shook me deeply, but in that moment, all I could do was pray and trust God.

Thankfully, after a few minutes, she was back to her normal self. It was another reminder of just how precious life is and how much we have to trust God, even when we are afraid.

“When I am afraid, I put my trust in You.” — Psalm 56:3

I’m grateful for every prayer, every breath, and every moment God gives us. Please continue to keep Aida and our family in your prayers as we walk this journey. We believe in the power of prayer, and we know that God is faithful.

Some days I sit and wonder how far Aida has come.

From being given just four days to live at birth, to enduring nine cardiac catheterizations, open-heart surgery, and countless hospital visits, her journey has been nothing short of a miracle.

Now, we prepare for her Fontan surgery with faith, hope, and grateful hearts.

Thank you to everyone who has prayed, shared, donated, and stood with us. Please continue to keep Aida in your prayers. If you're able to help with her journey, every act of kindness makes a difference.

One step closer. One heartbeat at a time. ❤️

Many people have been asking what kind of surgery Aida will be having, so I wanted to explain it in a simple way.

Aida was born with a very rare and complex congenital heart condition. Unlike most hearts, hers has not been able to function in the usual way. Since the day she was born, she has faced challenges that most people could never imagine, countless hospital visits, procedures, medications, and open-heart surgery. Through it all, she has shown incredible strength and courage.

The Fontan procedure is the next major step in Aida’s heart journey. It is a complex open-heart surgery that changes the way blood flows through her body. The surgery helps by redirecting oxygen-poor blood directly to the lungs, allowing her single working ventricle to focus on pumping oxygen-rich blood to the rest of her body.

The Fontan surgery is not a cure, but it can give children and young adults with complex heart conditions the opportunity to have better oxygen levels, more energy, and improved quality of life.

The road ahead will be challenging. Recovery will take time, and there will be many appointments and challenges along the way. But after everything Aida has overcome, we continue to hold on to faith, hope, and the belief that brighter days are ahead.

We are deeply grateful to everyone who has prayed for Aida, shared her story, encouraged us, and supported us in any way. Your kindness has helped carry us through this journey.

As we prepare for this life-changing surgery, we are still raising support for Aida’s journey, including travel, accommodation, daily expenses, and aftercare during her time away from home. If you are willing and able to help, any donation, no matter how small, would mean so much to our family and bring us one step closer to getting Aida the care she needs.

Thank you for continuing to stand with us. Please keep Aida in your prayers as we prepare for this next chapter. We believe her story is still being written, and we are grateful to have so many amazing people walking this journey with us. ❤️
