Vale Billy Picken

A legend of Victoria Park has left us.

Many a duffle coat could be proudly seen in the Victoria Park grand stands with the number 25 emblazoned on the back. A fan favourite because Bill Picken was everything a footy fan wanted to see in a footballer. Ridiculously high marking, prodigiously graceful kicking and tough at the pill. He had it all and then some.

Billy was our finals specialist and central to the success of the Tommy Hafey era. If only we had one more Billy Picken on the park, 4 runners up medals could easily have been 4 premierships.

The VPHC sends our sincerest condolences to the Picken family and everyone who loved Billy.

212 games, 46 goals for Collingwood (1974 – 1983, 1986)
28 games for the Sydney Swans (1984 – 1985) before returning to Collingwood in 1986.

130 years ago today the Collingwood Football Club would stride onto Victoria Park to play its first ever game of football in Victoria's premier competition, the VFA.

Less than 3 months earlier the Club was born at a packed out Collingwood Town Hall. A team of young enthusiastic footballers was hastily brought together to play against Carlton.

The grand stand which was also the Club's change rooms had not been completed in time for the first game so the team got changed in the Yarra Hotel on Johnston Street and ran up Rich Street to Victoria Park to play.

The game was played in front of an estimated 16,000 people and even though Collingwood would lose narrowly to their significantly more experienced opponents, it would not take long for the Mighty Magpies to achieve premiership success. Within five seasons they would win their first VFA flag.
