This is a great graphic to explain the reasons why potentially unsafe products are sold.
There are many products on the market which carry risks so it is very much buyer beware and unfortunately the onus is on the consumer to do their research. If consumers believe a product is unsafe concerns can be registered with Product Safety Australia on this link https://www.productsafety.gov.au/about-us/contact-us/report-an-unsafe-product-form

Why is tummy sleeping in the first six months especially risky for babies?

While babies may seem to sleep more soundly on their tummies, this deeper sleep actually comes with hidden dangers. Tummy sleeping reduces a baby's natural arousal responses. These arousal responses are an important protective mechanism and are essential, especially for infants during the first six months when risk of SIDS is highest.
Tummy sleeping significantly reduces arousal, that's why experts strongly recommend placing babies on their backs to sleep.

Frequent waking is biologically normal and plays an important role in supporting healthy growth, and brain development. While broken sleep can feel exhausting, implementing safe sleep practices helps to protect and nurture your baby during this important stage of development.

Create a safe sleep environment for your precious little one by:
• placing baby on their back to sleep
• using a firm, flat sleep surface
• keeping the sleep space free from loose soft items like pillows and toys
• sharing a room, not a bed
• responding to feeding cues day and night

Waking often isn’t a “bad habit” - it’s newborn behaviour designed to keep babies fed, regulated, and safe as they adjust to life outside the womb 👶

Always place baby in a safe sleep environment for every sleep, day and night.

We now know more than ever about how to help reduce the risk of Sudden Unexpected Death in Infancy (SUDI) and the good news is, there are simple steps every parent and caregiver can take.

Here are the 6 steps to safer infant sleep:
Always place baby on their back to sleep
Keep baby’s head and face uncovered during sleep
Keep baby smoke-free before AND after birth
Use a safe sleep space for every sleep, day and night
Room share with sleeping baby
Breastfeed or provide breast milk if you can

These small actions can make a big difference. Let’s help every baby sleep safely. 💛
