Milk Crate Theatre

Milk Crate Theatre Milk Crate Theatre effects social change through the power of performance.

Milk Crate Theatre provides opportunities for people whose voices are under-represented to engage in artistic practice to build confidence, skills and connections; and shares bold and resonant stories to build empathy and break down barriers. We are the leading arts organisation in Australia working in the unique intersection of the arts, homelessness, mental health, and disability, providing prof

essional development pathways and opportunities for collaborative artists to engage in creative practices as both performers and theatre and film creators of works.

Our programs are run for, with and by members of the community that have a lived experience of homelessness and the complex issues associated including people with mental health, financial, emotional and physical support needs, addiction, trauma, domestic violence and people who are recently arrived.

Milk Crate Theatre works within a Community Arts and Cultural Development (CACD) model, meaning our working is community centred and collaborative. Professional practicing artists facilitate programs and projects where participants are encouraged to contribute ideas, share stories and engage in creative expression within a safe and supported environment.

We believe that by bringing communities together and working from a strengths-based approached, we can make positive impact on participant well bring.

We love seeing research that champions the arts. 🙌

A New Approach recently published The Big Picture — a fascinating deep dive into how Australian governments are investing in arts and culture, how we compare to our international counterparts, and what more could be done. Really valuable reading for anyone working in this space.

✨ FLASHBACK FRIDAY ✨

Throwing it back to the beginnings of something big — the Co-Design phase of Creating Impact. 🌱

Creating Impact is a multi-year, national project bringing together arts organisations, funders and experts to co-design and implement a shared impact framework for the community-engaged arts sector. Milk Crate Theatre is proud to be leading the project.

During the Co-Design phase, our project group worked alongside impact consultants Huber Social (shout out to Michelle Macaskill and Simon Vaughan) to develop a sector Impact Thesis (Theory of Change) and a shared impact framework — including a universally agreed set of outcome measures.

Big thanks to all the organisations involved: ActNOW Theatre, Arts & Cultural Exchange, Beyond Empathy, Brand X, CuriousWorks, Community Arts Network, Empire Youth Arts, Improv Theatre Sydney, opn., Digital Storytellers, Think+DO Tank Foundation, Sydney Youth Orchestras and Outloud.

From those early conversations, a national framework is taking shape. Watch this space. 💪

Thanks to our supporters: Create NSW, Creative Australia, City of Sydney, Minderoo Foundation and James N Kirby Foundation.

Reconciliation isn't something you do once a year. It's how you show up — in your workplace, your community, your everyday life.

This National Reconciliation Week, we're reflecting on what "All In" means for us at MCT. It means culturally safe programs. It means listening before acting. It means this work never stops.

We're in.

This week we wrapped up a stellar project with ! With the support of artists, AP Pobjoy (of Homebodies fame) and Siobhan Gibbs (of Gogo fame), this talented crew of emerging filmmakers produced a gripping teaser for a q***r noir crime project called "Just The Girl" which follows Mx D, investigator and hacker, unravelling a mystery involving a lost dog, an evil landlord, missing party girl and suspicious Beth Friend.

Big thanks to Dorothy, Tabby, Yeng and Luna for sharing their creative genius with us and working together in such a collaborative and inspiring way.

This project was a partnership with Milk Crate Theatre and was supported by Multicultural NSW through the COMPACT program

✨ FLASHBACK FRIDAY ✨

Throwing it back to one of our most powerful creative moments — Sit in That Chair. 🎶

Originally created for our 2019 immersive theatre show Natural Order, this political cabaret anthem was written by our Collaborative Artists to capture what it truly feels like to be at the mercy of social systems — housing, welfare, bureaucracy. Composed by Tim Hansen, it's part protest song, part emotional reckoning — think Bohemian Rhapsody energy with something urgent and deeply human at its core.

The Sydney Street Choir joined us, two organisations united by a shared belief in amplifying underrepresented voices. Together, they recorded and mastered the track at the world-renowned Studios 301 in Alexandria — a studio that has hosted the likes of Prince, David Bowie, INXS and Lady Gaga.

At the time, Artistic Director Margot Politis reflects: "In writing this song, we collaboratively narrowed in to focus on systems — how they bind us, how they keep us trapped in cycles, and ultimately how they strip us of a common modicum of freedom."

Creative Team:
Director: Margot Politis | Producer: Lauren Vassallo | Composer: Tim Hansen
Performers: Darlene Proberts, Lisa Griffiths, Matthias Nudl & Pauline Trenerry
Guest Collaborative Artists: Sydney Street Choir, directed by James Paul
Videography: Rolling Media Productions | Senior Engineer: Jack Prest, Studio 301
