We’ve just passed new laws to keep dangerous drivers off our roads quicker, and for longer.
It’s called Kelly’s Law, in memory of Kelly T’Hart, who was just 32 when she was tragically killed by a drunk driver in Furnisdale.
Not long ago I stood with Kelly’s mum and family who’ve advocated so strongly for this lasting positive legacy to our State. Now the laws we talked about that day have been passed by Parliament.
This is about our Government making our community safer.
The driver left the scene without helping Kelly, and despite facing serious charges, was back on WA roads just two months after the fatal crash, including on the street where Kelly’s family lives.
That shouldn’t have been able to happen. And thanks to Kelly’s Law, it won’t.
These changes will stop drivers facing serious driving charges from getting back behind the wheel before their first court appearance, and also give courts greater powers to extend licence disqualifications until a case is finalised and sentencing is complete.
We’ll also extend licence disqualification notices to cover all offences that carry a disqualification penalty, including drink and drug driving, reckless and dangerous driving, high-level speeding and hit and run offences.
These changes are all about building safe and inclusive communities - to help keep dangerous drivers off our roads and protect innocent people from harm.
