Damien Hurrell for Ravenswood Ward

Damien Hurrell for Ravenswood Ward I'm honoured to serve as Councillor for Ravenswood Ward in the City of Greater Bendigo. I'm here to be a champion for the people: a Councillor that cares.

And who better to care than a Nurse?

The first round of counting has concluded, and I am honoured to have a 137 vote lead. It's very close! A preference count will be required next Thursday. But whatever the result, thankyou to everyone who supported me through the campaign and with your votes. It means a lot to me to have such support from the community.

I'm saddened to hear of the death of former councillor for Kangaroo Flat Barry Lyons. Being on council is an act of service to the community, and that's certainly what Barry did.

Thankyou Cr Lyons for your service to the community. My thoughts are with his wife Betty and all his family and friends at this time.

We plan, life has other ideas. I was joining with other members of the Upper Spring Creek Landcare group on a native flora identification event, when I found an injured joey. Fortunately I have the Wildlife Rescue number in my phone, so I was able to call for help. Thankyou to the volunteers from both Landcare and Wildlife Rescue for what you do: this morning has brought home the importance of what you do.

And here's the number for Wildlife Rescue if you want to put it in your phone: 0419356433

Fantastic day at Lake Weeroona for the Bendigo Rowing Regatta. Clubs from all over Victoria coming together to race, and win or not, there's great camaraderie between the crews. Rowing is also the best, low impact,

Sporting clubs add so much to our community. I want to make sure that they can keep doing that, and that council supports them, rather than putting barriers in their way.

So if you haven't already, please vote for me so that I can help build up our sporting clubs, and make Bendigo an even better place to live, work, and compete.

Do you know about Bendigo's intercultural ambassadors program? It's one way that Council works with people from various cultures who have chosen to make Bendigo their home https://www.bendigo.vic.gov.au/community-services/community-and-care/intercultural-ambassador-program

The new group of ambassadors were announced at the , and I was lucky enough to meet some of them. They, and their communities, are part of making Bendigo even Better, and I look forward to working to working with them if I'm elected.

Remember, vote 1 for Damien Hurrell, to Care for our Community.

While I was out talking to residents last week I came across this tree (which is growing on council land), which was large and low that it basically totally obstructed the footpath and makes getting to these people's letterboxes a real battle. I'm a defender of established trees for all sorts of reasons, but I think this is an example of why they also need to be managed so that they don't become a nuisance or a significant threat to safety.

I also think it shouldn't need a resident to make a complaint for street trees to be maintained. Council should be about making our lives easier and better, not about giving us more work. That's what I'll advocate for if I'm elected.

Like the music says, Nursing has been my lifetime plan, and my Uni has been teaching people to be nurses for 50 years. It was a pleasure to take part in a celebration of that milestone today.

I'm grateful for LaTrobe: amongst many other things they taught me to listen with empathy, to analyse data from multiple sources, to make a reasoned argument, to plan interventions, to critically evaluate outcomes, and to be part of a team. And of course, to care for everyone equally. These are skills that are essential for nurses, but also essential for councillors. I know that I have the skills and values to represent Ravenswood Ward well, and I'm asking for your support to do just that.

So please vote to send a Nurse to Council, to Care for our Community. Vote 1 Damien Hurrell

Thanks to Bendigo Sustainability Group for hosting the first candidate forum for Council elections last night.

I went along because although I'm not a candidate or resident of Axedale, Eppalock or Kennington wards, if I'm elected, I'll be making decisions that impact across Greater Bendigo, and I want to hear all resident's questions and concerns directly.

There's another forum for Whipstick and Lake Eppalock next Tuesday, and the final one will be for Lockwood, Golden Square and Ravenswood next Thursday. Maybe I'll see you there!
