Fantastic celebratory World Wetlands Day event at St. Francis School, Tannum Sands, organised by the School and Conservation Volunteers Australia, Activities included marine debris sorting with Tangaroa Blue, tree planting with Gladstone Regional Council Friends of Conservation, Australian Native Bees demonstration and guided walk and bird observation with Birdlife Capricornia. Whilst the schools wetland is currently inaccessible to students Harbour Watch brought our own water source complete with all manner of aquatic life so that students from Prep to year 6 got to explore and identify life within local wetlands and waterways. Around 140 students in our special outdoor classroom hands on learning in the field!

Hi,

Recent funding approval means that Port Curtis Harbour Watch has openings for a number of free school based education sessions focussed on water quality monitoring and sustainable water use between now and the end of November this year.

Activities centre on water quality investigations using biological indicator organisms for primary students and chemical and physical water quality parameters for senior students. Activities are designed to support delivery of the Australian Curriculum, providing hands on opportunities generally above and beyond the scope of the classroom. Where appropriate activities can be scheduled to occur at local wetlands or waterways providing students with fieldwork opportunities.

Activities are designed primarily for year 3 to senior with focus areas including food webs, life cycles, adaptations, classification and identification keys, water cycle, physical and chemical properties of water, environmental science, sustainability, data collection and analysis.

Places are limited, with preference for delivery on Tuesdays/Wednesdays but with some flexibility available around delivery days. Feel free to contact me to discuss opportunities.
Cheers
Karl

NAIDOC Week celebrations. Welcome to Country ceremony with local Byellee elders on country at Byellee Wetlands Reserve. Wetlands are looking good, bird life was abundant, weather was awesome. One of the largest dragonfly nymphs I have ever seen and water quality good!

Some photos from our World Wetlands Day event, with Conservation Volunteers Australia, Gladstone Regional Council and BirdLife Australia.

St Francis Catholic Primary School Tannum Sands Year 6 students had fun learning about the life in our local waterways and how to investigate water quality using macro-invertebrates as bioindicators. Basically, the water bugs in the water can indicate how clean and healthy the environment is. Lake Callemondah had a surprising diversity of aquatic life, and the streamside planting facilitated by GRC Conservation team and CVA can only help improve the wetlands by increasing biodiversity and improving erosion and sediment control. ๐Ÿ˜€
