Exciting news Whitlam! 📚 ✏️

Construction of the William Hovell Drive Duplication project has started.

The project will duplicate 4.5 kilometres of road between John Gorton Drive and Drake Brockman Drive to ease congestion and improve safety in Canberra’s west.

The duplication will provide improved access to new and emerging suburbs including Strathnairn, Ginninderry and Macnamara.

Initial construction work includes:
• Asphalting of temporary pavement areas at the current roundabout on William Hovell Drive, Drake-Brockman Drive and Kingsford Smith Drive where a new signalised intersection will be built
• Continuation of earthworks to establish site compounds along William Hovell Drive
• Preparation for barrier placement along William Hovell Drive for upcoming nightworks.

To enable construction to proceed safely, there will be overnight closures of William Hovell Drive between Drake Brockman Drive and John Gorton Drive (both directions) from 8pm to 6am each evening starting Monday 25 May until Saturday 30 May 2026, weather permitting.

The project is being delivered in partnership between the ACT Government and the Australian Government through the Infrastructure Investment Program. Construction is expected to take approximately three years.
