Really interesting work from CSIRO on the future of large-scale solar in Australia ☀️

As Australia works toward 82% renewable energy by 2030, solar will play a major role by potentially supplying almost a quarter of our electricity by 2050.

It’s great to see innovation happening across design, AI, and how solar can operate alongside industries like agriculture.

The demolition of Liddell Power Station is now underway, bringing a close to over 50 years of history in the Hunter.

While it’s a big change to see these familiar structures come down, it’s exciting to see what comes next. The site will be transformed by AGL into a renewable energy hub, including battery storage, recycling facilities, and advanced manufacturing.

This new chapter is expected to create jobs, attract investment, and make great use of the existing infrastructure in the region.

A big shift, but a positive one for the future of the Hunter. 💡🌱

🔶 Get to know our team 🔶

Say hello to Mary, one of our Net Zero Economy Authority Graduates 👋

Mary is currently in her first rotation with the Monitoring, Research and Policy Development Team, where she’s been involved in the Hunter & Central Coast Transmission Infrastructure Supplier Showcase and research into renewable energy testing process and facilities.

Before joining NZEA, Mary studied Environmental Studies and Asian Studies at the University of Sydney. Her interest in how communities interact with their environments led her to volunteer with the SES, giving her hands on experience responding to emergencies and working directly with communities (storm damage repairs included - just don’t ask her to fix your roof 😉).

What does she love most about working at NZEA? 🌱 The chance to learn broadly across the organisation, work with friendly people, and gain exposure to projects she never expected to be part of so early in her career.

Outside of work, Mary creates intricate fantasy maps, writes stories, and is always up for a song exchange 🎧.

Curious about the work Mary’s been involved in? 👇 Check out the Hunter Transmission Infrastructure Supplier Showcase and how it’s helping connect the clean energy future: http://srkr.io/6181BE3h

🌞 Recently, there’s been some big progress in renewable energy across the Hunter!

🔋 A $302M solar and battery project in Muswellbrook has reached financial close. The project will deliver 135MW of solar power plus battery storage to help supply electricity when demand is high and is expected to support 200 local jobs during construction.

⚡ In parallel, NSW Government has launched its largest-ever renewable energy tender, aiming to deliver:
🔹 Enough electricity to power about one-third of homes in the state
🔹 Large-scale storage, so energy can be used when it’s needed most

Hunter-based projects funded under previous rounds of the Long-Term Energy Service Agreement tender program include AGL's Tomago and Liddell battery projects and ARK Energys Bowmans Creek Wind Farm Battery Energy Storage System.

These developments are all about building a more reliable, affordable, and sustainable energy system as coal-fired power stations retire.

Great to see regional areas like the Hunter continue to play a key role in powering the future 💚

What does the future look like for young people in the Hunter?

At the Newcastle and Lake Macquarie Careers Expo, we spoke with students about their hopes, questions and career ideas and even got them behind the wheel of an electric racing game experience ⚡🏎️

We learned that while many young people know the energy change is happening, they want to better understand what it means for their future and how they can be part of it.

That’s why we’re supporting programs like Net:Zed's Transitioning Economies – Your Say, helping students explore real career pathways in a changing energy landscape.

We had a fantastic time connecting with businesses in Gladstone and Rockhampton earlier this month 🙌

From conversations on the ground, it’s clear Central Queensland has strong capabilities and a huge role to play in the transition to net zero.

Now we’re inviting local businesses to take part in the Central Queensland Supply Chain Mapping Project.

✅ Get your business in front of investors and developers
✅ Showcase your capabilities
✅ Be part of future net zero opportunities in the region

Whether we met you at the expos or not, you can still get involved.

🌱 The NSW Skills for Net Zero initiative is helping students gain paid, hands-on experience while contributing to real sustainability outcomes.

Hunter Diment’s internship with Azaneo, an ag-tech company developing herbicide free electric weeding solutions, gave him exposure to fieldwork, data analysis, and research planning, all while supporting more sustainable agricultural practices.

Working alongside Dr. Paola Rallo, the experience highlights the value of practical learning in preparing students for careers in the transition to net zero.

Did you know around 90% of a wind turbine can be recycled? ♻️

As wind energy continues to grow across Australia, so does the focus on what happens at the end of a turbine’s life.

While most materials can already be reused, turbine blades are more complex, but that’s where innovation comes in. From surfboards made from retired blades to new recycling technologies, industry is finding smarter ways to reduce waste.

🔋 Why are big batteries four hours long? Because that’s the optimal size for today’s energy system.

Big batteries aren’t designed to power the grid all day. They’re built to step in during peak demand, usually in the evening, when solar generation drops and electricity use rises.

By storing cheaper daytime energy (often from rooftop solar) and releasing it during the evening peak, four‑hour batteries do exactly what’s needed to help keep the grid stable.

✅ Four hours isn’t a limitation
✅ It’s a smart, practical fit for how the system works right now
