🌡️ Did you know the delivery temperature of hot water in your home should be set to a maximum of 50°C? Setting your hot water to 50°C can significantly reduce the severity of burns, especially for children and older adults.

There is a common myth that a child who is struggling in water will splash, yell or cry out for help.

The reality? Childhood drowning is almost always completely silent. It can happen in less time than it takes to grab a fresh towel, and in just a few centimetres of water.

Because there is no noise to warn you, constant, active adult supervision is one of the most effective ways to keep your little ones safe around household water hazards - from the bathtub to the backyard pet bowl. This means staying within arm's reach at all times.

Don't rely on your ears - keep your eyes on them at all times 👀

Did you know? Hot food and drinks are the most common cause of burns and scalds in children. Help reduce the risk by practising these simple safety steps at home:

🔥 Keep all hot drinks and foods well out of children’s reach.
🔥 Never hold a baby or young child while drinking a hot beverage.
🔥 Use reusable travel mugs with secure lids, as the smaller opening can reduce the risk of spills and serious burns.

Kidsafe, in partnership with the Australian & New Zealand Burn Association (ANZBA), has launched National Burns Awareness Month (June) to raise awareness about burn prevention and the importance of proper first aid.

Burns can happen in a matter of seconds, but providing immediate and appropriate first aid can help minimise the extent of the injury and support a better recovery. If a burn occurs, cool the affected area under running water for 20 minutes and contact 000 if emergency assistance is required.

Button batteries can cause serious internal burns in as little as two hours if swallowed by a child. They’re found in many everyday household items - from toys and remotes to key fobs and musical cards.

If you suspect a child has swallowed a button battery:

❌ Don’t make them vomit
📞 Call 000 immediately or go straight to the nearest emergency department

Knowing how to respond in those first critical moments can make all the difference. Emergcare's child and baby first aid course can help you feel more prepared and confident in an emergency - book here: https://emergcare.com.au/courses/paediatric-infant-cpr-course/

The theme of this year's National Reconciliation Week is ‘All In’ - a call for all Australians to commit wholeheartedly to reconciliation every single day.

‘All In’ reminds us that reconciliation is a shared journey. True progress relies on our entire community coming together, with every individual and family stepping up to take action and share the responsibility.

At Kidsafe Victoria, we are dedicated to working alongside families and communities to help create a safer world for children. Reconciliation won't happen by itself, and it won't happen without everyone playing their part.

You can access our Aboriginal resources at kidsafevic.com.au/home-safety/aboriginal-resources/, and learn more about National Reconciliation Week at https://www.reconciliation.org.au/

If you have a septic system, when was the last time you checked the security and condition of the lid? 🤔

If you're having people over or visiting someone who has one, make sure to follow our top septic safety tips to keep your little ones safe:

➡️ Identify and regularly inspect all septic pit lids, replacing damaged ones
➡️ Establish a regular inspection schedule for lid security and condition
➡️ Where possible, install barriers to prevent children gaining access to septic system areas
➡️ Prevent vehicles from driving over or parking on septic pit lids to avoid damage
➡️ Consider installing a child-resistant screen under the lid as a back-up option if the lid fails
