Clunes Fire Brigade

Clunes Fire Brigade Clunes Fire Brigade is a volunteer run fire station that is part of the Country Fire Authority (CFA) based in Victoria.

The Clunes Fire Brigade has over the past 150 years served the residents of Clunes and District with one purpose in view that is - Strive to Save

It was after a fire in Creswick in 1860 that the "Clunes Commercial Club" resolved to hold a public meeting to call attention to the residents of Clunes the necessity of forming a fire brigade and procuring a fire engine, but after a number of attempts

nothing happened. In March 1861 after a stable fire at the “Washington Hotel” in Fraser Street, a special meeting was held with Mr J C Weickhardt in the chair for a Hook and Ladder Company be established at Clunes. 42 men were elected as volunteers; a committee of nine was formed to collect funds to carry out the objectives of the company. A Mr George W Dow was elected as captain, Mr S Rushworth and Mr J C Weickhardt as secretary and treasurer. A deputation to council for funds toward the Hook and Ladder Company were sought, a sum of 25 Pounds was given, and the company raised another 25 pounds bringing a total of 50 pounds for the company. In 1863 Treasurer Mr J C Weickhardt and sixteen others attended the council asking for a public meeting to form a “Fire Brigade” and to take steps to procure a fire engine at a public meeting. The chairman declined to hold a meeting after waiting 45 minutes and lack of numbers. In 1864 a meeting was convened for the purpose of establishing a “Volunteer Fire Brigade” with 50 persons in attendance. A bank balance of 3 pounds two and six pence was in the bank of a former Hook and Ladder Company. There was also a quantity of hooks, ladders and buckets and a building which could be handed over to the Brigade if formed. It was moved that a Brigade be formed and called “Clunes Volunteer Fire Brigade” and consist of 30 working members, with no person under 21 could be considered qualified. This being the formation of the Fire Brigade.

2014 marks the celebration of a significant milestone for Clunes and the Clunes Fire Brigade in particular. It recognises the 150th Anniversary of the formation of the Brigade even though it has been a form of fire protection in the town prior to 1864.

A friendly reminder from our chief:

The fire captured in this post was of a fire earlier today near Clunes in Glengower. We had members from our brigade and surrounding brigades help bring this fast moving grass fire under control.

Please use this as a friendly reminder to stay vigilant and don’t become complacent on fire

Friday will have a Catastrophic fire danger rating in the Wimmera, North Country and North Central districts. I stress that we are not facing a Catastrophic rating in our home district (Central) however this doesn’t mean fires don’t occur as we are in an extreme rating.

We really cannot stress enough to please stay vigilant and alert. Have a chat to your family and have a plan should the worst case occur. Please stay alert on the VicEmergency app. We recommend creating a watch zone around Clunes to be alerted for any incident that may arise.

For anyone with any concerns or questions feel free to message us and we will do our best to assist. Our crews are all over the conditions for the coming days and will be ready to respond if necessary!

A Catastrophic Fire Danger Rating has been currently forecast for Friday 9 January 2026 in the Northern Country, North Central and Wimmera districts. A Catastrophic rating signals the worst possible conditions for grass and bushfires. For your survival, leave bushfire risk areas - if a fire starts and takes hold, lives are likely to be lost.

An Extreme Fire Danger Rating has also been forecast for the remainder of the state. Take action now to protect your life and property.

Stay up to date with warnings and incidents via VicEmergency: www.emergency.vic.gov.au

Fire Danger Ratings are forecast using Bureau of Meteorology data up to four days in advance, but can change on the day. Therefore, it is important to check the Fire Danger Rating for your area every day and know which rating is your trigger to act.

Community Update!!!

As many of you are aware, just before 11am this morning, our crews were alerted for a grass fire spreading along Glengower Rd,

Following the further information and on the initial approach, the call was escalated and more resources were called upon, at the peak of the fire there was approximately 20 appliances, from CFA, FFMV and even private units were in attendance.

A Watch and Act alert was placed for the Clunes community as a 10+HA grass fire was rapidly spreading. The hard work from our firefighters and local farmers, (who we couldn’t be more thankful for, there hard work doesn’t go unnoticed!) we were able to contain the fire from further spreading, with no loss of structures either

As we head into the colder months of winter 🥶 we cannot stress enough to you, that fires can start anytime, anywhere, so please continue to keep your fire plan up to date, and stay upto date on the vic emergency app,

Would also Iike to touch on the fact, if there’s a situation unfolding, whether it’s a fire, car accident whatever it may be, whilst we understand people may be concerned or wanting to know more information, we ask you to stay clear from the scene and let emergency services do there jobs. Unfortunately today, we had noticed a high presence of people driving up and down the roads trying to see the fire, putting not only themselves into danger but all of our emergency service workers,

so please we ask you to stay clear- if you are really desperate to see the action unfolding, then apply to become a member and give back to your community

🚨🚨🚒 Fire Danger Period🚒🚨🚨

And with that folks the 2024-25 fire season comes to an end this Thursday at 1am

With what has been a relatively busy fire season for our local members we couldn’t be anymore appreciative of all their hardwork and commitment to keeping the community safe,

The fire season seen our members combat fires local to Clunes and as far as little desert near dimboola as we all played our part in protecting the community

We can’t thank all of the Clunes locals enough for being prepared for the fire season, and for all your supportiveness and kindness, it’s why we do what we do,

As we draw an end to the fire season, this is a timely reminder that just because the fire season concludes that fire doesn’t. We ask to please continue to stay vigilant and continue to be fire ready,

If you are intending on burning off once FDP concludes please help our members out by reporting your burn-off to the following link 👉 https://bit.ly/3UqUN5b

Please keep an eye out on our Facebook over the coming weeks as we move our focus from bushfire to house fires and helping you better prepare yourself

16/04/2025

For those in and around Clunes today, there will be a planned burn to the north-west of Merin Merin Swamp. The brigade is aware of the burn which is permitted and has all the required resources to go ahead. If you see smoke in the area, its likely to be this planned burn.

🚨🚒 Clunes Fire Brigade is pleased and honoured to announce the newest addition to our brigade

Fire snags and Fireman Frankie

After many months getting a clearance from the local vets and plenty of hours spent training doing their general firefighter, we are delighted to welcome the snags on board

Fireman Frankie will no doubt be a huge addition to the team, by having their own aerial platform and hose line ready to go. Saving us time having to call in the Ladder Platform from Ballarat

Having these Fire snags on our team will allow us to access small and tight spaces leading to more time efficient rescues
