From June to August, we're holding six fortnightly editing sessions to create, improve and translate LGBTQ+ content across Wikipedia, Wikimedia Commons and Wikidata.

That's it for Australasia 2026! 🎉
For a second year, Wikimedia Australia and (WANZ) joined forces for the Southern Hemisphere window of the global "One Librarian, One Reference" campaign — inviting library and information professionals across both countries to add citations to Wikipedia.

Over three weeks of online workshops, drop-in editing sessions and in-person events in Melbourne, Canberra, Dunedin, Ōtautahi Christchurch and Tāmaki Makaurau Auckland, the numbers spoke for themselves:
📈 4,540 articles edited
✍️ 11,700 edits
🔗 4,170 references added
📚 1.32 million words added
Articles edited, total edits and words added were all more than doubled compared to 2025!

In an age where more and more people turn to AI to find information, the need for verified, trustworthy knowledge has never been greater — and Wikipedia relies on volunteer editors to keep it reliable.

Huge thanks to Australian Library and Information Association and LIANZA for helping spread the word, and to every librarian and new editor who gave their time. You helped improve the internet, one reference at a time. 💙

"The future of Wikimedia is fundamentally human."
For three days in May, eight Australians joined around 150 Wikimedians in Kaohsiung, Taiwan, for the ESEAP Conference — the regional conference for communities across East, Southeast Asia and the Pacific.

Our crew was busy across the program: Belinda Spry introduced the new Wikimedia ESEAP Hub and Community Connectors and helped facilitate the Women and Gender stream alongside Amanda Lawrence; Alice Woods shared her work improving Northern Territory representation through Wikidata; Ali Smith came along as a social media ambassador; and Ni Komang Ista Triana took part in the Youth Track and the launch of the ESEAP Youth Group.

From AI and gender equity to youth engagement, the throughline was the same — the movement's greatest strength is its people.

Happening now at — WMAU's Alice Woods on improving the representation of the Northern Territory, one Wikidata item at a time 📍

Alice has been steadily working through a Mix and Match list of over 15,000 entries from the NT Place Names database — adding 2,000+ items and improving thousands more. Aboriginal place names, outstations, protected areas, and yes, even shipwrecks and hydrographic rocks!

Day two at the ESEAP Conference in Kaohsiung 🇹🇼, and the regional collaboration story just keeps building.

Day 2 opened with a conversation between the community and the Wikimedia Foundation Board of Trustees — a chance to put the questions that matter most to ESEAP directly to the people steering the movement. From there, the day branched into sessions on data and technology collaborations across the region, the UCoC ecosystem five years on, internet policy (with our own Amanda Lawrence from Wikimedia Australia presenting), threat modelling and digital safety, and a brilliant launch of the new ESEAP Youth Group.

There were also lightning talks, a poster showcase, and the announcement of a new MoU between the Wikipedia Asian Month User Group and St Aloysius University of India — another tangible piece of cross-regional collaboration coming out of this conference.

What's striking is how much of yesterdays program was about partnership: between affiliates, between generations, between regions. The ESEAP community is genuinely figuring out how to support each other better, and it's a privilege to be in the room for it.
