Coopers Plains Long Acres Fire Department

Coopers Plains Long Acres Fire Department To provide fire protection, emergency medical aid and to respond to calls of assistance for preservation of life and property to which we are trained

The Coopers Plains-Long Acres Fire Department was incorporated in 1953. It was started with one truck, a 1936 Ward LaFrance/Ford Pumper, and some portable pumps by the men who wanted to have a fire department. The fire department building was completed in 1955. It was remodeled in 1974, and in 1985 the department built a second floor addition which includes a kitchen and community room, as well as

adding fire bays. The current building has five truck bays and storage on the ground floor. The fire district includes all of Long Acres and Coopers Plains, which is NYS Route 415 from the Village of Painted Post line to the Campbell Town line. In addition, the district includes Aurene; West Hill Road; Smith Hill Road; and the portions of Beeman Hollow Road, Erwin Hollow Road and King Hill Road in the Town of Erwin. The department provides joint fire protection for the area including Corning Incorporated’s Sullivan Park facility. The fire department is a Volunteer Fire Department with an Insurance Services Organization (ISO) fire suppression rating of Class 4. The fire department is very proud of this rating because it is usually only earned by full time professional city fire departments. Besides fire suppression, the fire department provides BLS First Response for EMS calls, vehicle extrication, and has a large cache of cribbing and Rescue 42 stabilization struts for vehicle and building stabilization. Coopers Plains Fire Department is also a participating member of the Steuben Regional Technical Rescue Task Force for structural and trench collapse rescue.

The New York State Police are reminding the public to understand and follow New York State laws regarding e-bikes, e-scooters, and off-road electric motorcycles.

We’ve seen an increase in complaints and safety concerns in Madison County, particularly involving the illegal operation of electric dirt bikes on public roads and in residential areas.

Know the law:

E-bikes & E-scooters
• Must be operated by riders 16 years of age or older
• Helmets required for riders ages 16 and 17
• No sidewalk operation unless locally permitted
• Must follow all traffic laws and yield to pedestrians
• E-scooters limited to roads 30 mph or less
E-dirt bikes / off-highway electric motorcycles
• Classified as off-highway motorcycles under NYS law
• Not legal on public roads, sidewalks, bike paths, or parks unless fully registered, insured, and street legal
• Most recreational models do not meet these requirements
• Use is limited to private property with permission

Illegal operation of these vehicles creates serious safety risks for riders and the public.

Parents and guardians: Please ensure minors are not operating vehicles that are not legal for roadway use. Unsafe or repeated behavior may result in enforcement action, including charges such as endangering the welfare of a child.

The New York State Police will continue working with the community to promote safe and lawful operation.

Ride responsibly. Ride legally. Keep our communities safe.

🚒 Training Never Stops 🚒

This week, members of the Coopers Plains Long Acres Volunteer Fire Department participated in an in-class training session with the Campbell Fire Department, reviewing vehicle extrication skills and techniques through a detailed PowerPoint presentation.

A special thank you to Campbell Fire Department, Ny Fire Department for the invitation and opportunity to train together. Working alongside neighboring departments helps us strengthen our skills and better serve our community when emergencies happen.

Stay tuned for next week's hands-on training, where we'll put what we've learned into practice by cutting vehicles and sharpening our extrication techniques.

Training today means being prepared for tomorrow.

Thank you, Campbell Fire Department, for investing in the safety of our communities and helping us continue to learn and grow together. 🚒🤝🚒

Opportunity & Mutual Aid Collaboration

We recently participated in a rural water supply training exercise hosted by the Corning Joint Fire District at the Guthrie Corning Hospital campus.

Also participating were Forest View-Gang Mills Fire Department and Big Flats Fire Department.
During the training, valuable data was collected comparing tendering (nurse tanker) operations and portable tank operations in rural water supply scenarios. Exercises like these help departments evaluate efficiency, improve coordination, and strengthen our ability to provide effective fire protection throughout our communities.

Thank you to CJFD and Chief 47 for hosting this beneficial and informative training exercise. We appreciate the opportunity to train together and continue building strong mutual aid partnerships.

🇺🇸 Today, we honor and remember the brave men and women who gave their lives in service to our country.

Before you enjoy the picnics, parades, and time with loved ones, we ask everyone to take a moment of silence for the fallen heroes who made our freedoms possible.

From all of us at the Coopers Plains Long Acres Volunteer Fire Department, we wish you a safe and meaningful Memorial Day.

🚨 Motorcycle Safety Reminder 🚨
There have been a jarring amount of motorcycle accidents this week. Please check twice and show courtesy to our fellow motorcycle riders. A few extra seconds of attention can save a life. 🏍️❤️
✅ Look twice before changing lanes
✅ Check blind spots carefully
✅ Use turn signals early
✅ Give motorcycles extra following distance
✅ Stay alert at intersections
✅ Put the phone down while driving
✅ Share the road with patience and kindness
From all of us at the Coopers Plains Long Acres Volunteer Fire Department — stay safe and look out for one another.

Thermal Imager Cameras (TICs) are powerful, compact tools that allow firefighters to see through smoke and darkness by detecting heat revealing what the human eye simply can’t. They help us locate hidden fire, identify victims, and safely navigate zero-visibility environments by displaying temperature differences in real time. In fast-moving, high-risk situations, a thermal imager isn’t just a tool, it’s a lifeline. It guides our search patterns and strengthens our situational awareness when every second counts.

Thanks to a recent grant, we’re proud to share that every one of our apparatus is now equipped with its own thermal imager. No more relying on just two for the entire department this upgrade means faster response, safer operations, and better outcomes for our community.
