Dalveen students help conservation efforts for endangered Dalveen blue box

Southern Downs Regional Council recently bought 110 Dalveen blue box (Eucalyptus dalveenica) seedlings and gave 20 trees to the Stanthorpe Rare Wildflower Consortium. The Consortium, in turn, donated 5 trees to Dalveen State School to help raise awareness about this critically endangered species, and inspire students to contribute to our conservation efforts.

The Council planted their consignment around Dalveen and in town beside Quart Pot and Funker's Gap Creek. With only 350 trees so far identified in the area around Dalveen, its only known location, it is one of Australia's most threatened trees and we are keen to expand the population. The rest of the Consortium's seedlings will be given to local landholders and we are investigating funding to enable more seedlings to be propagated and planted out.

This tree was only formally named as a new species in 2019, and thanks to efforts by the Consortium, it achieved its critically endangered conservation status at both the state and Federal level. It will take long term community efforts to secure its future.

What a wonderful afternoon of conservation and community at Dalveen State School!

We were thrilled to welcome Mayor Melissa Hamilton, Liz Bourne from the Stanthorpe Rare Wildflower Consortium, and Dalveen Local Cindy Ursem, who presented our students with five seedlings of the critically endangered Dalveen Blue Box eucalyptus species.

Our students had the very special opportunity to plant these seedlings and begin their own journey of caring for and conserving this precious local species.

It was wonderful to see our students getting their hands dirty and learning that even the smallest actions can make a big difference for our environment and future generations.

We can’t wait to watch our seedlings grow and see our students continue their important role as young conservationists!

Yesterday, our Year 6 leaders, Fred and Brooklyn, proudly represented Dalveen State School as they recognised and honoured the sacrifice of our veterans on Veterans Day.

It was wonderful to see our young leaders showing such respect and gratitude to those who have served our country. Well done, Fred and Brooklyn — you represented our school with pride!

A big thank you to Mrs Glas for providing transport and supporting our students on the day.

We warmly invite families, friends, and the wider Dalveen community to join us for a very special planting event as we help protect and restore the endangered Dalveen Blue Box (Eucalyptus dalveenica).

This is a wonderful opportunity to come together, connect with nature, and play a hands-on role in conserving a unique species that is part of our local heritage.
