The Southern Walks are open!

Parks and Wildlife is pleased to confirm the opening of the Southern Walks (except for Butterfly Gorge and Lily Ponds Walks) in Nitmiluk National Park from 1 June 2026, including all 3 Southern Walks campgrounds.

The March 2026 flood events caused considerable damage to the trails. All walkers should be extra cautious when walking and follow all warning signs and marked areas.

For park updates on what is open and current conditions please visit nt.gov.au/parks

Our NT Parks and Wildlife rangers have been working hard behind the scenes across the Top End to get popular parks open early for everyone to enjoy.

We had a big wet season this year and some parks across the NT were damaged, so we have been working hard to organise repairs and checks as quickly as possible.

The following sites are now open

Elsey National Park
• Bitter Springs

Litchfield National Park
• Channel Point access road is now safe to travel on, so you can head out and chase that big barra – don’t forget to book camping online.
• Thanks to the help of US Marine volunteers, the Tabletop Track is now ready
• Central Valley campground 3 and the day use area
• Bamboo Creek Tin Mine
• Tableland Creek (Sybel Springs) Campground – pack your 4WD, book online – adventure awaits
• Drum roll! - Despite the large wet and cyclone damage - Wangi Falls is open for swimming today – the same time as last year!

Conditions at Wangi Falls have changed this year, the sandbar has shifted and it’s not where it used to be.

The viewing platform is still closed for repairs and is expected to reopen in 2–3 weeks.

Parts of the loop walk are still being fixed, but the left hand section over the top is open and links to the Tabletop Track.

If you are visiting from outside the NT, then you’ll need to pick up an NT Parks visitor pass, also available on the website at https://parkbookings.nt.gov.au/Web/

When swimming in natural pools, understand your limitations, keep an eye on the conditions and if possible, swim with someone keeping a looking out. And if you can’t swim – don’t!

If a site is closed or a section is fenced off, it’s for your safety, please respect and adhere to all closures, barriers and signs.

Always Be Crocwise and stay up to date on park information at nt.gov.au/parks.

Archaeological adventures and cultural connections in Limmen National Park

Researchers, Marra Traditional Owners and Parks and Wildlife staff came together at Flinders University in February for an inspiring catch up on an archaeological project underway at Limmen National Park. The research combines archaeology and Aboriginal knowledge to support cultural heritage protection and long term care for these important places.
