Victorian Institute of Teaching

Victorian Institute of Teaching Our vision is to ensure that Victorian learners have the best teachers. VIT’s core purpose is to ensure that Victorian learners have the best teachers.

The Victorian Institute of Teaching (VIT) is an independent statutory authority for the teaching profession, whose primary function is to regulate members of the teaching profession. The VIT was established by the Victorian Institute of Teaching Act 2001 in December 2002. We do this by accrediting initial teacher education (ITE) programs, monitoring the suitability of registered teachers, developi

ng their practice through professional standards and regulating their compliance with the Victorian Teaching Profession's Codes of Conduct and Ethics. It is a legal requirement for all teachers to be registered with VIT in order to be employed in a Victorian school or early childhood education and care service or children’s service. Teacher registration helps maintain professional status, standing and public confidence in the teaching profession, particularly in the suitability of teachers to work with children. Our new Authorised Officer powers will help to support safer education settings and uphold professional standards 🛡️

Under the Education and Training Reform Act 2006, Authorised Officers now have a stronger, on-the-ground presence to carry out inspections, collect information, and speak directly with people in the field as part of our role as a regulator. This helps with early risk identification and consistent oversight 🔍

Our officers are trained in trauma-informed practice and cultural sensitivity, so they can work respectfully with school and early childhood communities 🦺

Together, we’re strengthening accountability, building trust, and supporting the safety of children and young people.

This Pride Month, VIT proudly stands with the LGBTQIA+ community - celebrating diversity, inclusion, and the courage to live authentically. 🌈

We believe everyone deserves to feel safe, respected, and empowered to be themselves - both in education and in the workplace.

Diversity is not just something we acknowledge. It’s something we actively nurture. It strengthens our community, broadens perspectives, and supports innovation.

Pride is a time to celebrate progress, recognise resilience, and reflect on the work still ahead. At VIT, we remain committed to building an inclusive environment where everyone belongs and every voice is heard.

Happy Pride Month 🏳️‍🌈✨

Trust and trustworthiness remain one of the teaching profession's greatest strengths, but it can't be taken for granted in a rapidly changing environment.

Proud to see our CEO, Martin Fletcher contributing to today's conversations at The Age Schools Summit 2026, exploring how trust in teaching can be strengthened amid growing expectations, workforce pressures and change across the education sector.

From educator wellbeing and evidence-based practice to Al, regulation and child safety, today's discussions reinforced a shared responsibility: supporting teachers, engaging communities, and a clear public interest focus to ensure regulation is a key enabler of teacher workforce safety, innovation and growth.
