❗ Measles alert – Watch out for symptoms❗

The Department of Health has updated a measles health alert for metropolitan Perth and the Pilbara following active cases in the community.

The cases visited several public venues between 20 July and 8 August 2025 while infectious. This included shops, food venues, medical centres, and Peel Health campus.

Watch out for symptoms of measles including:
• Fever
• Tiredness
• Runny nose
• Cough
• Sore red eyes.
• Red blotchy rash that usually starts on the face before spreading down to the body.

Calling all mums-to-be in early pregnancy!

We're seeking volunteers in the early stages of pregnancy (up to 12 weeks) to help our doctors learn and practice ultrasound techniques under expert supervision.

WA’s 24/7 Telestroke service links hospitals without stroke specialists to metro experts for rapid scan review, diagnosis, and treatment recommendations.

Since it began in 2021 the 24/7 Telestroke service has treated more than 3,000 patients across WA, with particularly strong uptake in regions such as the Southwest and the Great Southern.

This National Stroke Week, 4-10 August, make sure you know the common signs of stroke.

Stroke is always considered a medical emergency so remember to think FAST
• Face: Check their face. Has their mouth drooped?
• Arms: Can they lift both arms?
• Speech: Is their speech slurred?
• Time: Is critical. If you see any of these signs, call 000 straight away.

Are you pregnant and interested in supporting the next generation of doctors?

We’re inviting pregnant volunteers to participate in our upcoming ultrasound training session for junior doctors at King Edward Memorial Hospital on Saturday 30 August 2025.

All training will be overseen by expert sonographers.

If you’re in the early or later stages of pregnancy, with a due date between 27 September and 20 December 2025 or between 14 March and 25 April 2026, we’d love for you to join this supportive, educational experience.

A warm welcome to our Malaysian health colleagues.

The Department of Health was proud to host a delegation from Malaysia last week at the State Health Operations Centre (SHOC) in Perth.

The group met with the Director General of Health and local clinicians to tour the SHOC and learn how we work behind the scenes to support health services, deliver care statewide and respond to emergencies.

It’s always inspiring to share ideas, learn from others and showcase WA’s world-class approach to health system coordination.

New nurse/midwife-to-patient ratios now in effect 🩺

We’ve rolled out the next stage of nurse/midwife to patient ratios. This supports sustainable workloads, strengthens leadership, and puts patients first.

The new ratios are:
🕒 Day: 1 nurse per 4 patients (+ hands-free shift coordinator)
🌙 Night: 1 nurse per 7 patients

They’re being rolled out at:
• Royal Perth Hospital
• Perth Children’s Hospital
• Fiona Stanley Hospital
• Fremantle Hospital
• Rockingham General Hospital
• Armadale Health Service.

Calling WA pharmacists! 📢 New training opportunity to help deliver faster, patient-centred care across WA.

Under the new Enhanced Access Community Pharmacy Pilot (EACPP), pharmacists who have completed an approved university graduate certificate course will be able to assess, manage, and treat a range of conditions in a community pharmacy setting.

🩺 Training starts September 2025 – with subsidies of up to $12,420.
💊 Trained pharmacists will be able to prescribe for common conditions like pain, nausea, and minor wounds.
