Originally formed as a University Detachment of the 9/15th Battalion in 1932, The Queensland University Regiment (QUR) was formally raised in 1948 and has since evolved in-line with the force generation requirements of the Army Reserve. In late 2017, QUR transitioned under command of the 8th Brigade. Today, QUR’s primary functions include: The management of all Army’s Reserve ab initio recruits in

Queensland, conducting initial employment training for Army Reserve Infantry soldiers, conducting Army’s Reserve All Corps Officer promotion courses, and, training the Army Reserve Officer Cadets based in Queensland.

This week the Command team from 8th Brigade - Training - Australian Army visited their favourite University Regiment!

Queensland University Regiment hosted Commander 8 Brigade (and former CO QUR) Brigadier Scott Denner, RSM WO1 Pete Kirkman and Deputy Commander Colonel Andrew White this week for a whirlwind visit. The Command Team checked in on the Land Combat Module running at Greenbank Training Area, addressed the Part Time Foundation Major’s Course and spent time with QUR personnel at St Lucia and Gallipoli Barracks.

Our ‘All In’ Tuesday night Professional Military Education focused on Leadership and the State of the Army. The COMD gave a synopsis of changes to the National Defence Strategy before QUR members peppered the panel with questions about leadership, the current geopolitical context and even a few book & podcast recommendations.

We also took the opportunity for COMD 8 BDE to present Officer Cadet Lucinda Boon for Australian Operational Service Medal - Border Protection and the Operational Service Badge - Military from her previous service as a Soldier who was posted to Kimberley SQN NORFORCE.

It’s always great to support our local community - particularly on ANZAC Day.

RSM Queensland University Regiment WO1 Matt Ryan, SGT Mick Oram and Officer Cadets from Jacka Company were proud to support University of Queensland Rugby Football Club’s ANZAC Day match and a special commemoration to mark the occasion.

QUR has had a close connection with The University of Queensland throughout our history and St Lucia itself has plenty of military history predating the formation of the Regiment and the opening of our St Lucia depot.

During World War II there were defensive positions including pits and barb wire around the location where the UQ Sports Athletic Centre where the ANZAC Day match was played.

A great initiative by a great club and thanks University of Queensland Rugby Football club for getting us involved.

Queensland University Regiment’s Future is so bright we’ve got to wear shades! 😎⬇️

One of the way’s QUR contributes to being an ‘Army in Society’ is through supporting our members in participating in Australian Defence Force Sports.

When MAJ Ben Edwards isn’t forging the next generation of Army Reserve Majors he’s busy hitting the trails on his mountain bike with Australian Defence Force Cycling! 🚵

QUR’s Officer Training Team delivers the Part Time Foundation Captains and Foundation Majors course suite for the Army Reserve so MAJ Edwards is usually busy supporting Trainees and Instructors through out the year.

ADF Sports is a great way to challenge yourself, broaden your ADF network and of course represent Australia’s favourite University Regiment!

*The last photo might not be MAJ Edwards but if you squint it kind of could be…

It’s all happening for Australia’s finest University Regiment at the moment ⬇️

Instructors and Officer Cadets from Jacka Company have just returned from a few weeks setting the standard for all our fellow University Regiments to follow on the Part Time Officer Comissioning Program module 3 and 5!

After two weeks of tactics, techniques and procedures, the odd CONOPS brief and even a bit of Holsworthy wildlife we capped off the course with a great Dining In.

Thanks Sydney University Regiment for having us and bring on the next course block - let’s get these Officer Cadets graduated!!!

They shall grow not old as we that are left grow old.

Age shall not weary them, nor the years condem.

At the going down of the sun and in the morning, we will remember them.

Queensland University Regiment playing our part of an ‘Army in Society’ this ANZAC day.

Thank you to all of our QUR members representing the Australian Defence Force at ANZAC Day events across our community.

To our fellow Veterans - thank you for your service. To Defence families - thank you for your support - you are the foundation for our service.

Lest We Forget.

Queensland University Regiment’s Officer Cadet Company, Jacka Company is hard at work forging the next generation of Army Reserve leaders.

While completion of Part Time Officer Commissioning Program modules is the main effort, Tuesday night parades and regular Training Weekends is where we maintain and enhance readiness.

This weekend Jacka Company is making use of Greenbank Training Area to hone small team tactics, refresh skills learned on recent PTOCP modules and prepare for the next step in each Officer Cadet’s progression.

We’d also like to acknowledge all our Officer Cadets and Instructors who are completing Mod 3 and Mod 5 in Sydney as we speak - a few more days of hard work and Dining In to cap off the course!

A certain regiment got a visit from the Special Emergency Response Team… ⬇️

Normally when the Queensland Police Service deploys SERT it is to resolve high risk incidents anywhere in this great state. This time it was to pay a visit to the best University Regiment in Australia!

Queensland University Regiment hosted a Professional Military Education event earlier this week as part of our monthly ‘All In’ Parade. In addition to our regular Padre’s Points our visiting lecturers from SERT gave us an in depth briefing all about leadership and team work in high risk incidents.

Our Officer Cadets and a few experienced hands from Regimental Headquarters, Jacka Company and Training Company were treated to a rare insight to elite police tactical response operations and got to check out a whole heap of Gucci kit (Army slang for weapons & equipment)!

A huge thanks to Training Company and our resident SERT members who continue to serve in Army Reserves as well - the embodiment of the ‘twice the citizen’ service ethos.

It’s not every day you get to enjoy sunset in style!

The Commanding Officer, Regimental Sergeant Major and representatives from all ranks at QUR recently had the privilege of attending Queensland University Regiment Association’s reception with the Governor of Queensland at Queensland Government House.

All QUR members were dressed in their finest and on their best behaviour. If you look carefully you’ll spot a few of our OCDT’s keeping a close eye on OC Training Company Major Tyler’s decorum!

It was a wonderful opportunity to visit Queensland Government House and meet her Excellency the Honourable Dr Jeannette Young AC PSM, and her husband Professor Graeme Nimmo RFD - an alumni of Australia’s finest University Regiment himself.

Our Professional Military Education program even featured in the Governor’s speech, along with the acknowledgment of the ongoing service QUR provides to our community.

Thanks again to Queensland University Regiment Association for organising the event. A timely reminder of the rich history of our Regiment and the many accomplishments of our Alumni.

We’ve got a new Chief of Defence Force and our first female Chief of Army! ⬇️

A big congratulations to Vice Admiral Mark Hammond who will be our next CDF on promotion. He will be replaced as Chief of Navy by Rear Admiral Matthew Buckley on promotion.

Historically we also see Lieutenant General Sue Coyle appointed as the next Chief of Army, the first female to hold this role. Her replacement as Chief of Joint Capabilities is yet to be announced.

Our next Chief of Army started her career as an Army Reserve soldier with the 12/16 Hunter River Lancers so she understands the challenges and rewards of being ‘twice the citizen’.
