450 locals have signed a PETITION to Stop The Chop of MATURE TREES at Hilton park sport and nature precinct.

A protest and petition signing event took place 11am 18th August 2026 at Hilton Park in a bid to save the small remaining open space that is nestled alongside an AFL oval. Quokka spoke to many attendees and was told many now regret voting for both Councillor Pip Slaughter and Mayor Lawver. The reasons include feeling misled on their environmental stance for the greater Fremantle area.
The Hilton park sporting precinct already includes four ovals/playing fields alongside one open space filled with trees. Many Peppermint trees and eucalyptus trees sit alongside historic Norfolk pines which are evident in a Landgate photo dated to1953. Local reports show sporting clubs clashing with local dog walkers over the past year proving open space is under pressure and should be expanded not reduced.
