THE CLOSING OF GERALDTON GAOL

Geraldton Gaol will soon be closed. It will soon be used for short term sentence prisoners only. The whole town is up in arms over it. (Geraldton Guardian 04 March 1922)
They're closing the Gaol, said Jimmy the drunk, The home where I spent the best years of my life;
The news had him worried, he was in a blue funk, It cut to his heart like a needle point knife.
This palace where many a sinner had dined, This home for the homeless was closing its door, Where Jimmy was taken by constables kind But, sad to relate, it will happen no more.
Short sentence prisoners, said Jimmy, what rot! l've stuck to the place for a good many years, And now when a bloke has to do a good lot, We've gotta go south, said Jimmy, amidst tears.
He sobbingly cried, with a pitiful wail,
For God's sake don't close up the Geraldton Gaol.

Come and visit us Mondays to Fridays 10am - 3.30pm and Saturday Mornings 9am- Noon and learn about our history.
