This Sunday, more than 20 fire trucks and 100 firefighters from across the Northern Rivers will come together in Casino for the Northern Rivers District Exercise.

As we prepare for the upcoming fire season, this exercise will ensure our members are ready to respond when called upon and that our equipment is operating as it should. The day will provide realistic training opportunities to strengthen operational capability, teamwork and preparedness so we can continue to protect our communities.

While weโ€™re preparing, we encourage everyone in our community to do the same. Now is the time to prepare your property, reduce bush fire hazards where appropriate, and ensure you have a current Bush Fire Survival Plan in place before the fire season begins.
More info here - https://www.rfs.nsw.gov.au/resources/bush-fire-survival-plan

A special thank you to Richmond Valley Council for their valued support in helping make this exercise possible.

If youโ€™re in the Casino area on Sunday, you may notice an increased emergency service presence. Please be aware that this is a planned training exercise, and there is no cause for concern.

Itโ€™s fast coming up to that time of year where our local cane farmers conduct pre-harvest burning.
As we have done for the last two can seasons Casino East Rural Fire Brigade - Greenridge/Tatham will again share advice of these pre-harvest burning activities when we are advised by farmers.

Itโ€™s that time of year again, when cane burning begins around the areas between Grafton and the Queensland border, and will continue over the coming months, through to the start of summer.

Often conducted at night, these burns may look dangerous, but are carried out by experienced farmers and crews prior to harvesting.

As these burns are often visible from the Pacific Motorway, we typically see an increase in calls from concerned motorists to Triple Zero (000). In some areas, variable message signs on motorways will warn motorists that cane burning is taking place.

Itโ€™s important that cane farmers notify the RFS and their neighbours at least 24 hours prior to lighting a burn. To notify the , visit our website: www.rfs.nsw.gov.au/notify

They beat us to it but they have explained it so well, we thought weโ€™d share it.

We would like to give a friendly reminder that even though the bushfire danger period will end at midnight tonight (31st March) , you are still required to notify your intention to burn to the Rural Fire Service. Follow the link below or call 02 6626 6922.

This is not a new rule, but with more people moving into rural areas, it is important for everyone to follow the rules.
If your fire is reported to 000 and you've failed to notify the RFS, significant fines can be issued.

Notifying all adjoining neighbours (including those directly across a road or creek) at least 24 hours prior to lighting, is still a requirement, regardless of the time of year.

Volunteers do not want to attend if you do not require help, so we ask you to take a few minutes to notify your intention.

Notify 24/7 in just a few minutes.

Over this past weekend several members from Casino East RFB along with other NSW RFS - Northern Rivers Zone brigadeโ€™s, deployed as a Strike Team to the Rocky River fire near Drake, to provide a well earned rest for the brigades of NSW RFS Northern Tablelands District.

Saturday we seen our Deputy Captain Frank Hill and Senior Deputy Captain Nate Cawley as part of the Strike Team, working on Bungawalbyn 9, and Sunday saw Advance Firefighter Alex Robson-Mortimer and Senior Deputy Captain Nate Cawley again deployed on Bungawalbyn 9.

Plenty of experiences were gained, particluarly as we normally work from our brogade Cat 1 Tanker (3500L) to working on a Cat 9 (600L).
Our strike team also had the benefits of being lead by North Casino Captain Steph Cawley ( doing third party hours for her Group Leader qualification) and Group Officer Scott Newton.

A great weekend was had by the Casino East crew, working with Casino Rural Fire Brigade , Tomki Rural Fire Brigade , Woodview RFB, Mummulgum RFB, Grevillia RFB, Group Officer Barry Morgan and the NRZ Bulk tanker.

Well done all crews!
