A very special business spotlight today

Thai Orchid Henley Beach was our family’s favourite restaurant and a place where we celebrated milestones, plotted and planned with Bunna and shared countless meals.

I grew up there alongside the owners’ daughters, and over the years, their family became an extension of ours.

Some local businesses serve much more than good food. They become part of our lives, our traditions and our families.

Thai Orchid will always be one of those places for us.

I know we are not alone in our community on this one.

To Bunna and the family, thank you.

Our first Father’s Day without you.

Not a day goes by that I don’t miss you, Dad.

Today, instead of spoiling you, we celebrate who you were, honour all that you did and draw strength from your example as we continue to fight for what matters.

To everyone who finds today difficult for their own reasons, my thoughts are with you.

And to all the dads, grandfathers and papous we are lucky enough to have with us, thank you.

Life is better with you in it.

And yes mum - this was probably one of the only times dad ironed.

Meet Nancy.

At 95, Nancy still walks along Henley and Grange twice a week, no matter the weather. She always yells out hello to me as I slowly run past with a big wave before stopping for coffee at the Grange Kiosk.

Nancy has also been a familiar face at the Airport Over 50s Club, helping to bring people together and strengthen the connections that make our community so special.

Thank you, Nancy, for the energy and friendship you show us all every day.

On the days where I feel like taking a break, I think of you out there and get it done. đź’Ş

From growing up playing at SMAA to returning to present the end-of-season awards, this club will always feel like home.

I remember how much these awards meant. You had spent a season as part of a team, made new friends, grown stronger and improved your netball, and now it was time to celebrate.

Thank you for having me back, and for teaching me the value of community sport, commitment and choosing to keep going when things feel difficult - one of my many favourite things we learn from being part of a team and sport.

Now, bring on the summer season!

A week ago, I joined students from Henley High at the Active Citizenship Convention, alongside more than 1,000 students from across South Australia.

Students cast a mock ballot and examined some of the real challenges facing our democracy, including misinformation and the growing influence of AI.

Not only was it fun but it was so good to see our local kids understand the importance of their voice and advocacy.

A win for our community.

Local mum Casey raised serious concerns about pedestrian safety, particularly for children crossing Grange Road.

I took her advocacy directly to the Minister, and we have now secured a new pedestrian-activated crossing on Grange Road, between Wright Street and Cudmore Terrace.

Construction will begin this month, with the crossing expected to be operational in early 2027.

Thank you to Casey and every local who helped make the case for a safer crossing. This is what strong community advocacy can achieve.
