⚽️ The Annual PIPS Father’s Day Soccer Grudge Match!
It was Dads vs PIPS Students once again, and the stakes were high! Mrs Essex gave the students a very important pep talk before kick-off — “Go easy on the dads… we don’t want to make any of them cry!”

With Mr Earley taking charge as referee, things got off to a cracking start. Goldie, however, seemed to think she was playing rugby league and took down the biggest threat on Team Dad! RED CARD! After a quick reminder that this was soccer, not league, the K–2 team settled into the game and fought hard to keep the score at 1–0 to the Dads!
Then the big kids from Years 3–6 hit the field and upped the ante, putting plenty of pressure on the dads!
Thankfully for Team Dad, they managed to hold on for the win and maintain what little dignity they had left heading into Father’s Day weekend!
A great game, plenty of laughs, and some serious schoolyard bragging rights!

Book Week was a wonderful success! It was fantastic to see our families once again go above and beyond with some incredibly creative costumes. Thank you for getting into the spirit and helping make it so much fun for our students. Throughout the week, students participated in art and craft activities inspired by this year’s shortlisted books. There was plenty of creativity, laughter and, most importantly, a celebration of books and reading.

SCIENCE WEEK 2026 – SEEDS OF SCIENCE: NURTURING KNOWLEDGE FOR ALL

What a fantastic start to Science Week at PIPS!

For Days 1 and 2, we have been exploring science that is quite literally growing all around us here on Palmers Island.

We were lucky to welcome Luke Moloney from Clarence Canegrowers, who shared his knowledge about the journey of sugar cane — from planting and growing through to harvesting. Students learnt about the science, technology and hard work involved in producing a crop that has been such an important part of the history and identity of Palmers Island and the Lower Clarence.

We then welcomed Matt Clarke from Sunshine Sugar, who helped us follow the next stage of the journey — from the harvested cane billets to the sugar packet! Students discovered how sugar cane is processed at the mill and transformed into the sugar we see on our supermarket shelves.

What better way to celebrate this year's theme, "Seeds of Science: Nurturing Knowledge for All," than by connecting science with our own backyard, our local industry and the history of our Palmers Island community?

A huge thank you to Luke and Matt for sharing their time, expertise and passion with our students. We love giving our PIPS kids opportunities to see that science isn't just something we learn in the classroom — it's happening all around us!
