Children show enthusiasm for participating in physical play. They are supported to collaborate, learn from and help each other, as they held hands with their peers, they had to work out how to pass the hoop over their body and onto the child next to them without letting go of hands.

The children have watched and observed the vegetable plants in our gardens grow and change every week at preschool during winter. Through the term we have picked and cooked spinach and the children have taken some home to their families.
Over the last 2 weeks our Spinach, Broccoli, Cabbages and Cauliflowers we’re finally big enough for us to pick, we cut them into pieces to shared with our preschool families.

Last week we planted Tomatoe seedlings. We will plant summer vegetable seeds and seedlings in our garden early next term. The children suggested we plant Beans, Lettuce, Beetroot, Strawberries and Tomatoes.

Following an interest in Megalodon Sharks, the children have been investigating the length of a Megalodon Shark. Using information from a book about Dinosharks, we used a tape measure to measure out 39ft to represent how big and long the Megalodon Shark was. The children wondered.... how many children we would need to make 39ft (17 meters). The children laid along the wall to see how many of them we would need to measure the same length as the Megalodon Shark. We needed 10:5 children to measure 39ft.
We then measured all children to see how tall we all are.

Gilgai Little Learners Transition has been cancelled for term 3.

Important Message - Regarding Kindergarten Transition
Gilgai Public School’s ‘Little Learners’ Kindergarten Transition Program has been cancelled for Term 3. All Kindergarten transitions have been suspended by the Department of Education in NSW. We had planned to start on the 19th August for our Kindergarten 2021, but this is no longer possible.

We are hopeful to have three full days of transition for our 2021 Kindergarten in Term 4, starting on the 27th October. This is pending any government restrictions.

The NRAV mobile pre-school is still operating Wednesday and Thursday at Gilgai Public School. It is a wonderful service and familiarises future students with Gilgai Public School. For more information contact our front office on (02) 6723 1309 or call IDFS directly on (02) 6722 4038.

Sharing our knowledge of Dinosaurs:....... Children’s Voices
JG and WE were talking about Dinosaurs at lunch time .... JG said to Michelle - there really were Dinosaurs!
WE- an asteroid hit the Earth and the Dinosaurs died because there wasn’t enough food.
NT-they are extinct, do you know why they are extinct? They all evolved.
JG- I have a book about Dinosaurs and in the end of the book they were all bones and the brown dead dirt.
WE- after the asteroid hit it rained just a little bit, and the wind and dust storm, made all the Dinosaurs disappear.
TF- a volcano erupted and a meteor came down, the Dinosaurs went extinct and when the meteor went out people came alive.

The children all drew their impression of a dinosaur.

CHILDREN ARE CONFIDENT AND INVOLVED LEARNERS
4:2 Children develop a range of skills and processes such as problem solving, inquiry, experimentation, hypothesising, researching and investigating. The children manipulate objects and experiment with cause and effect, trial and error, and motion.

Through children’s interests we have been doing some simple experiments. This week our experiment involved using Milk, food colouring and dish washing detergent. We poured the milk into a plate, add a few drops of different coloured food colouring, then dip the cotton bud into the detergent then into the milk, the food colouring begins to swirl and move around the plate once the detergent soaked cotton bud is added. It appears to work like magic and is fascinating to watch as the many shades of colours start form.

As the sun moved across the window the children observed coloured patterns on the floor, furniture and on each other.

My friend Dustin had a special request for stories about dogs, especially farm dog books and we were all set for that to happen last week before I was a bit too sick to do a live storytime. Well I’m back and so are our planned stories and craft. We have some wonderful stories about dogs to share and a great craft. Let’s turn ourselves into dogs, just like Billy in one of our stories. To make this craft you will need a paper plate (large), coloured paper, a Pom Pom, textas, glue, scissors, stapler, sticky tape and elastic. The craft can be found here red art.com/3d-dog-mask-diy We look forward to seeing you live for storytime this Wednesday, 20th May, at 11.30am 🙂
