Christmas has come early! 🚒

With the approach of a hot summer and the next fire season, the brigade has purchased an Aussie made BOUY WALL from Bartlett Manufacturing to help with storing water.

These BOUY WALLS or portable pools while small are incredibly valuable when fighting fires in difficult locations and supporting other fire trucks. They can also be used for training purposes and hazard reductions in the area.

A special thanks to our wonderful community and all of those who have made donations to the brigade. Without your generosity this new resource wouldn’t be possible.

Reminder that fire permits are required in the Shoalhaven area from the 1st of September

Bush Fire Danger Period commencing 1 September. 📅

The Bush Fire Danger Period (BFDP) will commence in the Shoalhaven on Tuesday 1 September. From this date, anyone planning to conduct a pile burn or other permitted burn will need to ensure they have the appropriate Fire Permit before lighting.

A permit is only one part of the process. If you're planning a burn, remember:

✅ CHECK - Make sure your proposed burn meets the requirements for a safe and lawful burn. Check your pile, surrounding vegetation, available equipment, and other requirements before applying.

📝 PERMIT - During the Bush Fire Danger Period, obtain the required Fire Permit online here https://nswrfsprod.service-now.com/guardian_csp before lighting your burn

📢 NOTIFY - Once you've identified suitable conditions and intend to proceed, you must provide at least 24 hours' notice before lighting:

Notify the NSW RFS online at https://nswrfsprod.service-now.com/guardian_csp
Notify all adjoining neighbours of your intention to burn.

🔥 BURN SAFELY - Continue to monitor weather and fire conditions right up until you light.

Having a permit does not mean you should proceed if conditions are no longer suitable. These requirements help ensure proposed burns can be appropriately assessed, planned burns are recorded before ignition, neighbours know that smoke or fire may be visible.

A little planning before you light goes a long way towards keeping our Shoalhaven communities safe.

This afternoon after proceeding to a report of a fire in Upper River Road, Kangaroo Valley crews re-deployed to a grass fire outside of Berry.

The fire was safely extinguished with a combined effort from Broughton Vale - Berry Rural Fire Brigade, Gerringong Rural Fire Brigade, Foxground RFS and Shoalhaven Heads Rural Fire Brigade

MVA - Moss Vale Rd.

Late this afternoon Kangaroo Valley 1 & 7 Alpha responded to a motor vehicle accident at the intersection of Moss Vale Road and Kangaroo Valley Road.

crews arrived to a two car collision, however thankfully nobody hurt or trapped. Our firefighters worked to manage traffic and clear debris off the road while the vehicles were taken away by two tow trucks. The road is now open in both directions.

This week’s training - PILE BURN. 🔥

This week our brigade members traveled out to Scotts Road to support a local resident with a pile burn.

It was another great exercise observing fire conditions and refreshing skills with portable pumps. Likewise, our new trainees got experience with hand tools and watching drip torch techniques.

These weekly training sessions are great for crew chemistry while being able to experiment with fire conditions and assist local property owners.

Can our Kangaroo Valley fire trucks reach your home in an emergency?

Does your property driveway have overgrown branches and other obstructions?

Fire trucks are much larger than a standard car and need clear space to get through safely. Overhanging branches, blocked access, and hard-to-see property numbers can all slow emergency responses.

Simple tips to improve your property access include:
• Trimming back vegetation along driveways;
• Check gate width and keep access ways clear;
• Make sure your property number is easy to see from the road, even at night.

Clear access and visible address details help us reach you faster when seconds count.

To all our Kangaroo Valley Brigade members and other first responders we share our deep respect and gratitude.

THANK YOU

First responders face challenges every day. In rural and regional areas these challenges are often amplified, as community led emergency services members often assist those they know or to whom there is a close connection.

First responders face uncertainty, stress and operational pressure. They often live in the community they serve and are frequently reminded of past events because of this.

Today is a day to wrap our arms around our first responders. To say thank you and to remind them that we have their back.

So ‘Thank you’. Thank you for your professionalism, your empathy and your commitment to our community.

Early start this morning with an 0130 callout to a fuel spillage which upon arrival a fully loaded semi trailer with a mix of petrol and diesel on board was located stuck on Budgong causeway after having taken a wrong turn, but after having hit an overhanging rock tearing a large gash in the tanker rupturing at least one tank spilling a large amount of fuel in the area. Crews from Cambewarra Rural Fire Brigade, Fire Rescue Nowra and Hazmat crews all working to contain the spill and make the area safe before decanting remaining fuel and attempting salvage of the truck

Last Wednesday Kangaroo Valley RFS supported NSW National Parks with a large 1300 hectare hazard reduction burn along Tallowa Dam Road.

It was a great opportunity to work along the National Parks crews and gain more local experience of fire behaviour. Thank you to everyone involved.
