Meet Jake, a volunteer First Responder with the QAS!

Our first responder volunteers give initial emergency medical care to patients in the local community while an ambulance is on its way, like splinting a patient’s leg, or starting CPR.

Jake has been a volunteer for 14 months and was inspired to help people in his community of St Lawrence and the surrounding coastal areas.

Jake says, “the best part is making a difference in my community when people need help most. Being able to provide immediate assistance in emergency situations before our paramedics arrive on scene. The role I’m in allows me to develop valuable skills and work alongside a great bunch of dedicated emergency service personnel. And honestly just being able to give back to the community!”

Thanks Jake for your service, and to all our volunteers within the QAS!

Tiny, shiny and deadly.

The only thing babies, toddlers and children love more than bright and shiny objects, is putting those bright and shiny objects in their mouths. Button batteries can cause serious injuries and death, even if the battery is old or flat.

It's International Button Battery Awareness Day, so please take some time today to ensure your homes are button battery safe.

Button batteries are often found in portable devices you can find around the home, such as car keys, watches, children’s toys, calculators, glucometers, hearing aids and cameras.

Keep batteries out of reach at all times. Ensure battery compartments are secured with a child-resistant locking mechanism. Dispose of used button batteries immediately.

If you suspect a child has swallowed a button battery, call Triple Zero (000) as soon as possible.

When it comes to Queenslander’s health, we’ve stacked the deck.

To get ahead of the changing health needs facing Queenslanders, the QAS employs a wide range of health professionals on the front line.

From paramedics to mental health clinicians, social workers and occupational therapists, our first responders will find the most appropriate entry point for patients into the health system.

From our staff you see face-to-face to those you don’t, we say thank you to our team of health professionals who turn up every day to help patients, no matter what care they’re dealt.

We are immensely proud to celebrate three exceptional North and Far North Queensland paramedics who have been announced as Ambulance Service Medal (ASM) recipients in the King’s Birthday Honours List 2026.

Torres and Cape District Director Krystal Smith, Officer in Charge of Tully Ambulance Station Vanessa Schafranek, and Townsville District Director Sandra (Sandie) Gawn will receive the prestigious award for distinguished service.

It is the highest honour awarded to Australia’s ambulance personnel.

These officers are highly respected and illustrate what it means to achieve excellence in ambulance care.

Their efforts have helped to strengthen our service, narrow the gap of healthcare for remote and First Nations communities, and improve the lives of Queenslanders.

Our most sincere congratulations and thank you for your outstanding service!
