Helping Hands ASD At Helping Hands we endeavour to help children with special needs reach their full potential What is Applied Behavioural Analysis (ABA)?

At Helping Hands we endeavour to help children with special needs reach their full potential by providing a safe, nurturing and productive environment. We are committed to providing the help families require and are passionate about delivering a high quality service for the children in acknowledgement of the privilege of being in their lives. Applied Behavioural Analysis is a field of psychology a

nd an approach based on applying learning theories to target specific behaviours and cognitive skills, and was the basis for the programs initiated by Ivor Lovaas to assist the development of children with Autism. Following Lovaas and for over 40 years, ABA has helped establish long lasting and significant improvements in communication, social interaction, cognition, independent living skills and play. Studies by Lovaas (1987) and McEachin, Smith and Lovaas (1993) have shown the effectiveness of ABA in addressing the developmental issues associated with ASD. More recent research on early intervention, using ABA principles, replicates the above studies. Children who participated in intensive early intervention had better outcomes and meaningful changes in skills and development in many areas. Quality ABA programs address a wide range of skill areas, but the focus is always on the individual learner, therefore goals vary from learner to learner, level of functioning and family needs and interest. ABA techniques and principles incorporate, discrete trial training, modelling, shaping and positive reinforcement. The basis for the programs is the attempts to understand the functions of behaviour and provide meaningful programs to support the child’s needs. It is also extremely important to note that a comprehensive ABA program should be practised and generalised in natural settings.

We are exceptionally proud to announce that our Director, Simone, is a finalist in the Westfield Southland Local Heroes awards and recognition program.

Voting opened today (Tuesday 25th August 2020) and will close 14th September 2020.

Your (community) vote will determine the final 3 successful Westfield Southland Local Heroes who will each be awarded a grant of $10,000 for their affiliated organisation.

As you know, we have been unable to fulfill any fund-raising events this year. Your vote could set us on the path to $10,000!
You can only vote once- it’s so easy, just go to the portal below and cast your vote.

Could you also think about asking friends and family to vote. That amount of money could mean some fantastic additions to our centre, not the least of which would be improving our sensory room.

We will be made aware of the winning candidate no later than 27 October 2020.
Thank you to everyone – and please, spare two minutes to vote! You only need to add your name and email address.
