Korumburra Staying Strong Concludes Four-Year Journey with Community Vision for the Future

Korumburra Staying Strong recently celebrated the launch of the Korumburra Community Directions Statement with a friendly community barbecue at the open shelter in the railway precinct. The Lions Club kindly cooked the barbecue while members of the Men’s Shed added to the occasion by handing out fresh donuts.

To help people explore the document, the Directions Statement was displayed in large format on the shelter walls so those attending could easily read and discuss the ideas it contains. The statement outlines the community’s vision for the future, identifies the priorities people feel are most important, and provides a pathway for progressing projects. It also celebrates what our community has achieved over the past eight years since the previous Community Directions Statement was compiled.

The document has been developed through many conversations, community events and a workshop held over the past three and a half years. It reflects the aspirations of the Korumburra community, and we were very pleased to receive such positive feedback from those who attended the launch.

The launch of the Directions Statement marks the final project for the Korumburra Staying Strong group. Our group originally formed after responding to an online call from the Foundation for Rural & Regional Renewal (FRRR), which was seeking Victorian communities to participate in a program focused on building resilience. Korumburra was fortunate to receive funding through this program, which supported a four-year journey of listening to the community and learning more about what helps build local resilience. One of the strongest themes to emerge during this work was the importance of connection within the community.

Although this project marks the end of the Korumburra Staying Strong group’s formal work, the initiatives developed through the program will continue. Several projects have now been integrated into other local community groups to ensure the work carries on.

The Community Directions Statement will be held by the Korumburra Round Table (KRT) and will also be presented to South Gippsland Shire Council in the coming months. It will be published on the council’s website alongside Community Directions Statements from other towns across the region.

Other initiatives will also continue to be maintained. The Korumburra Emergency Resilience Plan will be reviewed annually through Milpara Community House in partnership with South Gippsland Shire Council.

Meanwhile, the Korumburra community website — korumburra3950.com.au — has undergone extensive redevelopment and continues to grow in traffic. The site is a valuable source of local information and provides opportunities for people to connect through the many community groups listed and the events calendar. Both the Community Directions Statement and the Emergency Resilience Plan can be accessed through the website. Ongoing management of the website will now sit with the Korumburra Community Development Association.

For our group, the entire process has been a valuable learning experience. Not every project progressed as planned and some ideas encountered challenges along the way, but these moments were an important part of the journey. We are extremely grateful for the support and funding provided by FRRR, which made this important community consultation process possible. We are proud of what has been achieved and of the partnerships that have been built along the way.
