We are an active group of residents who work together to:
Conduct activities that raise the awareness of, enhance and celebrate the heritage of Medina. Advocate on behalf of Medina residents to Government, Corporations and Community. Conduct activities that support community cohesion and resilience in Medina. Work together to support and promote environmental awareness and sustainability. Plan and create community events that support and celebrate cultural diversity, heritage and community.

The Aboriginal Artwork project at the Koort of Medina is progressing. Earlier this year the Medina Residents Group commissioned Noongar artist Noelene Regan to conduct a series of art workshops in schools and community that will inform her design of four artworks on the hardstand at the Koort of Medina (northern side of the Medina shopping centre). Each artwork will have a different theme - Derbal Nara (Cockburn Sound), Beeliar Wetlands, Banksia Woodlands, and Tracks and Sky. To date workshops have been at Medina Primary, Gilmore College, Medina Hall and the Ngulla Yorga Waangkan group. Medina Aboriginal Cultural Centre is scheduled for late July. On completion of the 4 designs the artworks will be etched and stained into the concrete surface.

The project is supported by the City of Kwinana, Department of Local Government, Industry Regulation and Safety and Freo Ports.

Medina Heritage Walk
Sunday 24 May 9.30 – 1.00pm - 4.30pm, leaving Smirk Cottage, Medina.

The best way to discover the rich heritage of Medina is to participate in the Medina Heritage Walk. Presented by the Medina Residents Group the guided walk is an easy 4 kilometre stroll that weaves through leafy Medina stopping at various heritage sites to hear stories reflecting the history of the 1950’s suburb. Medina was built to house the workers and families of the BP Refinery and the then newly emerging industrial strip of WA. In May 2007 the suburb was classified as a Historic Precinct by the National Trust WA in recognition of Medina’s significance to the State and the largely intact original workers cottages and unique native bush parks designed by renowned WA town planner Margaret Feilman.

Mandy Grubb believes that what is unique about Medina’s history is that it is a living history.

‘Our history is not about buildings and plaques but about people. Medina is considered a special place for many of the original residents who came here as migrants to start a new life in a new country and who along with their descendants continue to live in the area some 70 years or so later. On the walk you will hear stories about the local butcher whose family operated for over 50 years in Medina, or the Walley family who unable to access housing in the town lived in the bush at Chalk Hill, the connection between the Queen and Bon Scott, and how in 1952 a 32 year old woman from rural WA created a town that was a showpiece of the nation. That’s what makes Medina’s heritage so special it’s a living and breathing thing’.

The Walk commences at 1.00pm from Smirk Cottage, Beacham Crescent Medina and takes around 3 hours including a 20 minute break for afternoon tea at the Green Barista café. Cost is $7.00/Adult and under 13 free. Cash only please. You are welcome to explore Smirk Cottage and the museum which are open from 11.30am.
