Regardings reports of a strong paint-like odour emanating from industrial areas adjacent to the M6 Active Transport Corridor.

Council received several complaints concerning the odour in the area and subsequently commenced an investigation. Inspections of the location were undertaken by Council’s Senior Environmental Health Officer on 5 May and 6 May 2026. During these inspections, an odour resembling diesel fuel was detected near the bridge structure. However, no obvious source of the odour could be identified at the time.

Council officers liaised with the NSW Environment Protection Authority (EPA), and an EPA officer attended the site to assist with the investigation. Despite these efforts, the source of the odour could not be determined.

A review of Council’s stormwater drainage mapping identified an underground stormwater drainage line located at the end of Kurnell Street, which discharges directly into the area where the odour was detected. It is possible that the substance responsible for the odour originated from this drainage system. Inspections of surrounding drains, gutters, and stormwater infrastructure were undertaken; however, no evidence of pollution or discharge was identified within the surrounding streets.

A follow-up inspection was conducted by Council’s Senior Environmental Health Officer on 27 May 2026. Recent rainfall appeared to have assisted in flushing the stormwater drainage system, which is suspected to be associated with the odour. While the odour remained present, it had diminished. Council subsequently requested the Environmental Management Unit – City Works to undertake cleaning of the affected area. At the time of inspection, no evidence was identified indicating that any substance had entered or impacted the broader stormwater system.

Council will continue to monitor the area and investigate any further reports received.

Meanwhile, there has been a significant decision in Peaceful Bayside debate about synthetic sports fields.

The Inner West Planning Panel has refused Inner West Council’s application for a synthetic turf field at Waterfront Oval, finding it was not satisfied there would be no adverse impact on Sydney Harbour water quality during flood events, as required under State environmental planning provisions.

The decision is being welcomed by many residents and environmental advocates as a win for community participation, environmental protection and transparent decision-making, with both supporters and objectors having the opportunity to present their views to the Panel.

This is particularly relevant to Bayside, where a majority of councillors have endorsed planning work for new synthetic fields in flood-prone locations at Kingsgrove Reserve, Bexley and Mascot Oval, despite previous concerns raised by council staff and environmental experts.

Councillors have also received presentations from the Total Environment Centre and the Department of Climate Change, Energy, the Environment and Water outlining concerns about microplastic pollution. The Cooks River and Muddy Creek have already been identified as among the most microplastic-polluted waterways in NSW.

Peaceful Bayside will continue advocating for healthy sporting fields, clean waterways and evidence-based decision-making.

At the end of last year councillors unanimously supported community consultation on exclusion zones for jet skis our beaches, and with this tragic milestone I’ll once again follow up with council staff on this consultation.

A meeting with Steve Kamper’s office with stakeholders promised for February this year has still not occurred.

We need to use these precious months before the summer months to prepare for safer beaches.

You were contacted by a resident regarding the nets at Brighton Baths not extending past the shoreline.

Just an update to let you know that all works are now complete to bring the nets further up the beach.”

A first for Sydney! Involving teen girls in co-designing a local park.

Bayside Council leading the way!

Urban planner Estelle Grech said the impact on girls of feeling they didn’t belong in public spaces was “lifelong”; parents were less likely to let young daughters out in public, and lower rates of participation in sport followed.

The reserve in Sydney’s south will be the city’s first park designed by – and for – young women.
