It was initially an informal gathering of dedicated Muslim sisters in Lakemba who were committed to providing community services targeted at meeting the needs of the multi-cultural Muslim women (and their families) in the area. Based on an IWWA survey, there was a need for more Islamic education classes for non-Arabic speaking women and their children as well as social activities and support netwo
rks for Muslim families in the community. Over 50 different nationalities make up IWWA’s members and classes are offered in English, Arabic, Urdu and Bahasa. With a membership of close to 2,000, IWWA is managed by a 9-member Management Committee (Shura) and 3 office staff as well as the support of volunteers. IWWA offers Islamic classes, Quran classes, Adult Arabic classes, playgroup, a Nursery service, School Readiness programme, Arabic for children, Pre-Teen and Teen programs, Seniors gatherings and a food programme for the needy.
