Victorian Socialists - Thomastown

On the weekend Victorian Socialists volunteers went to the community about the data centres being proposed in our backyard- South Morang right near Westfield, multiple schools and one of our biggest health clinics. We spoke to locals who already hate it and those who had no idea because none of us have been consulted with!

These data centres are a disaster. They will massively heat up the surrounding area, will guzzle millions of litres of water each day and use the same amount of electricity as 100-500 THOUSAND households per day! And all so the tech bro billionaires can continue to make mega profits, without a single cent being put back into the community.

Just like the toxic waste incinerator proposed for Wollert, this move shows the politicians do not care about working class lives and communities. Why dont these monstrosities get established in Toorak? Because the people there apparently deserve clean, cool air -unlike us.

I'm running with Victorian Socialists for the seat of Thomastown because we need to fight for working class people to be put before the profits of the rich. This is my home and where I spent my childhood. I will not go quietly as more big polluting industries try to ruin it. The Victorian state election will be held on Saturday 28th November. Victorian Socialists are running candidates across the state. Today, we're proud to introduce our lead candidate for the upper house in the northern metro region, Omar Hassan.

Omar is a primary school teacher and life-long trade unionist who lives and works in Melbourne's outer northern suburbs. He's been a political organiser and activist for more than two decades, and in recent years has played a leading role in the Palestine solidarity campaign.

Omar writes: "As the son of Lebanese migrants and a teacher in Melbourne’s outer northern suburbs, I’ve seen first hand how working-class communities have been left to rot by our political class. Schools, hospitals and childcare facilities across Melbourne are crumbling due to underfunding and neglect...

"As well, the privatisation of electricity, public transport, aged care and other essential services continues to result in terrible outcomes for the community. If elected, I promise to do my best to amplify these concerns and mobilise communities in Melbourne's north to fight for a better deal.

"As a member and representative of the Victorian Socialists I will fight on every front for a better world, one free of poverty and billionaires, racism and war, and where everyone can access the services they need without worrying about the state of their bank balance."
