So good to see a real legacy of our sporting heritage being preserved

Benny Pike OLY, chair of the taskforce's Heritage and Memorabilia committee presented the "Diaries of Spirit" 1989-2018, a collection of local Sunshine Coast Region sporting achievements, to the head of Council's Heritage Library, Jenny Ryan. Documented History also of Coast Olympians 1992 to 2016, and a copy of Professor Katy Kirby's booklet of the "Coast Sportster of the Year" 1968-2018. Great moments when Sunshine Coasters stood tall on the world stage. This collection will now be available to the Sunshine Coast Community via the Sunshine Coast Heritage Library.

SCR 2032 Sport Legacy Taskforce executive members presented deputations to Andrew Hopper Director General, Department of Tourism and Sport highlighting concerns surrounding the need for for expansion of regional sporting facilities such as the Caloundra Indoor Sports Centre, the Maroochydore Basketball Stadium and the Noosa indoor sports centre. These indoor facilities are bursting at the seams and provide vital community engagement for local residents of all ages. To realistically tackle the cost of living, youth crime, mental health, and environmental issues we need existing easily accessible facilities to be upgraded negating the need to congest our roads further by funneling grassroots sport to central locations.
Discussions also centered around opportunities to upgrade the Ballinger Park Hockey facility to accommodate elite training camps. possible 2032 Olympic games preliminaries and expansion of the local club competitions. in addition Coastal Rowing, a new Olympic sport would benefit from facility upgrades at the Maroochy, Mooloolaba and Noosa Paddle Sports headquarters.
We look forward to working closely with all levels of Government to best develop relevant Sport legacies leading to 2032.

During the 2023/24 season, Maroochydore Cricket Club forged a fresh partnership with Maroochydore Surf Club. This collaboration epitomizes the essence of community spirit with two local clubs working together for mutual benefits while fostering their own growth. As a token of our appreciation for this partnership, we are delighted to offer Maroochydore Surf Club a memento symbolizing the success of Swannies during this inaugural year, which we are confident will hold a cherished spot within the surf club.

Is this the Legacy we are looking for at Kawana?
Are we creating a traffic nightmare like this weekends carnival chaos in Graceville Brisbane. The 11,000 seat upgrade to the Sunshine Coast Stadium, in addition to building an 11 court Indoor Sports Centre by 2027 will create havoc on the streets of Kawana. Is there a better option to cater for the wider Sunshine Coast Community? We believe there is! A 6 court stadium close to the Maroochydore CBD with seating to host Olympic preliminaries, a 1 court upgrade to Caloundra Indoor Sport Centre and a fast track on the Caloundra South Indoor Sport Centre would go a long way in relieving the stresses on Regional grassroots sport, resident's concerns in the Kawana communities, and stop the displacement of the Kawana Dolphins rugby League.

SAY GOODBYE TO KAWANA DOLPHINS: Is the Sunshine Coast Stadium upgrade and consequent loss of 2 grass roots footy fields the right call or is there a better place for the new Indoor sport stadium, closer to the the proposed Athletes village in the Maroochy CBD? Below is the Beach Maters Group reply to Graham Quirks review, which appears to have been based on the caretaker council's outgoing mayor's rhetoric, with out consideration for community engagement.

"So, while the election was going on, the State Government quietly dropped the review that they recommended the Indoor Stadium go ahead at Kawana.
Now, without infrastructure, we will have Kawana at a standstill as in that whole area for years will be under construction while the industrial area will be transformed into housing, and the indoor stadium will be built.
What are they thinking?!
Not only will all the Kawana footy players and families have to somehow navigate around all this to get to fields way out in Meridian Plains, but residents and commuters will effectively be brought to a standstill getting north or south.
Well done Mark Jamieson on your behind doors pitch to State Government and the Junior Rugby League Board - WITHOUT any player, parent, supporter, sponsor, community or community group consultation, and well done on State Government for NO communication about this other than the tenants.
This decision is ridiculous! Not only is it far from the legacy we could have had i.e. a combined convention and sports centre in the CBD where there IS infrastructure, or a series of indoor community sports centres spread out through the region to be a legacy for several communities post games, it also eliminates rugby league in Kawana forever!
When Council say they want to protect and preserve outdoor, grassroots sports, they go and support this!
I sincerely hope the NEW council write to State Gov immediately to push back on this. I hope councillors outside of Div 3 fight like hell to prevent this - because, again, with all the focus on one division - you'll get nothing for your areas. We need to right a fair few wrongs from the previous council - if nothing else, surely everyone can see through this election - the community wanted a BIG change of direction.
Now the Kawana community will be left with a massive concrete jungle WITHOUT infrastructure that they'll have to PAY to use, less greenspace in an already compromised stretch, extra lighting near a turtle nesting beach stretch, and outdoor kids sports a thing of the past.
I wish to goodness the community didn’t sit on their hands with this & had of sent emails to object to this.
Come on new councillors, please get behind the community and push back on State Government and all spend funnelled into one area.
We have to do better than this.
Don't tell me what you think - tell them!
