The BEST!!!

🚨 THE WAIT IS OVER…🚨

This week on Keep the Bastards Honest, Hosts Heath and Elana are joined by The Gherk and Martin Bella — two names that have become pretty bloody hard to miss on Australian social media.

🥒 How does someone become The Gherk?
🎙️ Where did Martin Bella’s story begin?
👀 And what happens when an online persona suddenly has a life — and an audience — of its own?

We get the origin stories behind the names before talking about misinformation, science, facts… and the increasingly rebellious act of simply being radically sensible.

Remembering Don Chipp on the 101st anniversary of his birthdate.
(21 August 1925 – 28 August 2006)
Don Chipp was born in Melbourne and educated at Northcote Primary School, Northcote High School and the University of Melbourne, where he graduated in commerce. After playing Australian rules football for Heidelberg, he played briefly in the Victorian Football League with the Fitzroy Football Club (playing three games in 1947, for one goal). He also played for Prahran in the VFA and was a member of their 1951 premiership side. A champion sprinter, he was narrowly defeated in the 1953 Stawell Gift foot race.

We don’t need more heat.

We need more light.

At a time when politics too often rewards outrage, division and performance, we’re choosing a different path.

Pragmatic problem solving.Evidence informed.Values led.

Politics is not a reality TV show.

HAPPY NATIONAL VEGEMITE DAY!

Today we put aside our differences and unite behind the one issue that truly matters:

How much Vegemite is the correct amount of Vegemite?

The Australian Democrats support a diversity of views on this matter.

Some Australians believe in a delicate scraping over butter.

Others apply it with the enthusiasm of a plasterer renovating a bathroom.

Then there are the extremists.

You know who you are.

The people who eat Vegemite straight from the jar with a spoon while maintaining eye contact.

We don’t judge.

Well… maybe a little.

🤔 But have you ever wondered how iconic Australian brands like Vegemite came to exist?

The answer isn’t just entrepreneurship. It’s also the stable democratic institutions that allow Australian businesses to innovate, compete, employ workers, and become part of our national identity.

Democracy provides the rule of law, consumer protections, public infrastructure, education systems, and economic stability that allow home-grown Australian brands to thrive.

In other words, Vegemite wasn’t invented by a dictator.

It was invented in a country where people were free to experiment with the leftovers from beer production and somehow convince an entire nation that salty black yeast paste belongs on toast.

And honestly?

That’s beautiful. 🥲

Today we celebrate:
âś… Vegemite on toast
âś… Vegemite scrolls
âś… Vegemite and cheese sandwiches
âś… The weird cousin who eats it from the jar
âś… The democratic institutions that help Australian businesses succeed
