Check out this clip from Kuranda Conservation of one of their community nursery's Speewah Cassowaries, Lucas, taking a bath in their driveway!

Kuranda Conservation is an entirely volunteer organization whose objectives are to assist the community to use land in an ecologically sustainable way and to enhance natural biodiversity through education and demonstration.

They promote awareness of the environment required for the preservation of cassowaries including habitat protection and enhancement, and domestic and feral animal control. They participate in research to better understand the needs of this unique, umbrella species. If the cassowary survives then the other fauna and flora of our region will also.

Cassowary conservation in action: Thank you to C4 - Community for Coastal and Cassowary Conservation- Box 132 MissionBeach for sharing this story. Many people and groups in the Mission Beach area have been working to assist a young cassowary chick, Bodhi after he was found with a fishing lure caught in his neck. In these photos you can see the cassowary relocation and rescue box operated by the Queensland Government's Department of Environment and Science - for those reading this post from interstate or overseas the answer is yes: we have specalised gear for the capture and transport of sick and injured cassowaries in Far North Queensland. They are very special to us and as such a unique animal require specialist care. Bodhi spent the night in the Garners Beach Cassowary Rehabilitation Centre operated by Rainforest Reserves Australia before being released back into the wild. Good luck Bodhi!

Thank you to Wet Tropics World Heritage Area for these helpful tips to ensure the protection of cassowaries:

⚠ Minimise rural fences ⚠
To avoid restricting wildlife movement consider fencing your house yard rather than your property boundary.

🐕 Cassowaries and dogs don’t mix 🐕
Keep dogs behind fences or on a leash; roaming dogs hunt and kill chicks and adult birds.

❎A fed bird is a dead bird ❎
Never feed cassowaries, on purpose or by littering; it attracts them to urban areas and roads which can be a death sentence.

🚗 Drive slowly and take care 🚗
Slow down and be alert when travelling in the Wet Tropics; cassowaries can step onto roads without warning.

📲 Report sightings
If you see an injured, orphaned or dead bird, phone 1300 130 372
