Thanks to our local flora and fauna enthusiast Nathan Edwards for these recent photographs capturing our Malleefowl at Koolanooka Springs area in the Shire of Morawa !
I have added a photograph of an unused nest taken at Canna a few years ago.
They are such incredible birds to see if you are in the right place at the right time !

The malleefowl (Leipoa ocellata) is a stocky ground-dwelling Australian bird about the size of a domestic chicken. It is notable for the large nesting mounds constructed.
Instead of sitting on eggs, males build large mounds of soil and rotting leaf litter that act as natural incubators.
Malleefowl nest mounds are massive, measuring up to 5 meters (16 feet) across and about 1 meter (3.3 feet) high.
It is the only living representative of the genus Leipoa, though the extinct giant malleefowl was a close relative.
The malleefowl is considered to be threatened. Predation from the introduced red fox is a factor, but the critical issues are changed fire regimens and the ongoing destruction and habitat fragmentation.

Guided Walk 27th August 2026.
Despite the much needed rain last night and a chilly start, the everlastings opened up for us !
Lots of fun and laughter with this super bunch and of course much discussions on plants with showing of photos!
But welcome back to Mike and Sarah who came on a walk with me last year ๐Ÿ˜

Guided Walk 25th August 2026.
A big group of 16 people and 1 dog ๐Ÿ• today!
Most endured 4km return walk in warm temperatures.... those who endured enjoyed seeing the Ant orchid, Kalbarri cowslips orchids, last of the Hairy stemmed snail orchids, and lots of Dainty Blue or Shy Blue orchids.
The Dainty Blue orchids are hard to find, so taught my walkers how to look for them, one lady was most delighted to find one on her own with a show and tell photograph ๐Ÿ˜€
Another interesting plant to show was the Rosy Bellida with its formation from a yellow button heads to turning pink.
The pink Schoenia and Rhodanthe's are fading but still putting on a show.
We need some rain ! The next 2 days is hopeful โ˜บ๏ธ
