TOTAL FIRE BAN DECLARED FOR SOUTHERN TASMANIA
27th of January 2014
Due to locally hot weather conditions throughout today and forecasted hot weather for tomorrow, we have declared a Total Fire Ban (TFB) for the south of the State from midnight Sunday, 26th of January 2014 until midnight on Monday, the 27th of January 2014. A total fire ban is also likely state wide for Tuesday the 28th with very high to severe fire danger forecast.

With dry and hot weather predicted for the south of the state, we expect that any fire outbreak could be difficult to control. The weather is likely to remain hot until late on Tuesday.

We understand that many people are enjoying the long weekend, holiday making and on camping trips. Make sure you have electric or gas BBQs for cooking. There’s a lot of dry bushfire fuel now and it is important that you understand the risk that is out there.

Anyone who may have lit a fire recently, such as a camp fire or hazard reduction burn off must check and ensure it is completely extinguished.

During a total fire ban it is an offence to light any fire outdoors. It is also an offence to use any machinery or equipment that; may cause a spark or flame in the open air; or have heated parts such as engines and exhausts that may be in contact with dry vegetation; or are used for the harvesting, mowing, cutting and slashing of dry materials such as poppies, grass and cereal crops.

There are significant penalties that can be imposed on anyone not adhering to the Total Fire Ban restrictions
Follow the link for more details on fire bans. http://www.fire.tas.gov.au/Show?pageId=colFireBan

On days of Total Fire Bans, all outdoors fires are banned except electric stoves and barbecues, and gas stoves and barbecues provided they are cleared of flammable material for at least 1 metre. Other barbecues and portable stoves including those that use wood, charcoal or other solid or liquid fuel...
