Congratulations Worimi LALC and Port Stephens Council, it has been a pleasure supporting this project, supporting mob implement good fire on Country.
Our collaborative project, ‘Caring for Country with culturally informed cool burning’, has won the First Nations Partnership award at the 2026 NSW Local Government Excellence Awards! 🌟
To mark this special milestone, Leah Anderson - Mayor of Port Stephens along with the Worimi Local Aboriginal Land Council (WLALC) and our project teams, gathered at the Murrook Culture Centre to celebrate this shared success. 🤝✨
Over the last 3 years, our Environmental Team has worked hand-in-hand with the WLALC, Bindelong Aboriginal Corporation, and Hunter Local Land Services to undertake culturally informed cool burns at Salamander Bay and Mallabula. 🔥🐾
Together, we have achieved incredible cultural and environmental milestones:
🐨 Enhancing koala habitats
🍂 Reducing bushfire fuel loads
🤝 Strengthened collaborative relationships
🌍 Supported our vision of protecting and enhancing our local environment
This project was made possible thanks to the NSW Government's Environmental Trust ‘Caring for Country’ grant.
