Advice just to hand from Council’s LEMO…

NIMBIN BOILED WATER ALERT

Problems with water treatment means that drinking water in the village of Nimbin is unsafe.

Water used for drinking or food preparation should be brought to a rolling boil to make it safe. Kettles with automatic shut off switches can do this. Water should then be allowed to cool and stored in a clean container with a lid and refrigerated.

Everyone, particularly people caring for young children, should be careful to avoid scalding when you are heating and then cooling the water.

Bottled water or cool boiled water should be used for drinking, washing uncooked food (for example, salad vegetables and fruit), making ice, cleaning teeth, gargling and pet’s drinking water.

Dishes should be washed in hot soapy water or in a dishwasher.

Children should take bottled water or cool boiled water to school.

Tap water is safe for bathing. There is a potential risk if water is swallowed during washing and bathing. Parents and carers could consider a sponge bath for children as an alternative.

Lismore City Council is working to fix the problem.

This advice should be followed until further notice. Note that this boil water alert is in addition to the ongoing boil water alert in the Nimbin Rural system.

Good turnout this evening from Nimbin, Blue K**b, Stoney Chute & Goolmangar RFS volunteers - Village Firefighter training with the Nimbin Hospital & Nimbin Central School hydrant booster systems. Great hands on session to test the system & run through response procedures.

Our thanks to Blue K**b SDC Bill Cox for sharing his expertise & enthusiasm with our members, selflessly soaked to the skin while delivering this important lesson in mains & RFS tanker boosted hydraulics.

Each year Nimbin RFS volunteers frock-up Santa’s fire truck for the annual Nimbin Community Christmas Lunch; when Santa travels all the way down from his Blue K**b workshop, to spike the blood sugar levels of Nimbin kids & build lasting memories for their families. This year we tied that in with a Brigade station Xmas event.

Thanks to the Nimbin Neighbourhood and Information Centre for their collaboration throughout the year, spearheading (among many other support mechanisms) the Nimbin Disaster Resilience Group and the allocation of two extra water tanks to the Nimbin RFS station redevelopment.

Such an asset to have Jiggi Valley RFS moving & shaking across the valley these days. Congratulations on the growth in your brigade’s capability and our thanks for assessing Nimbin RFS’ newest & youngest member, Mischa. We’ve no doubt he will become an asset to both Nimbin & Blue K**b brigades. Well done Mischa & to all involved.

Been busier than usual for The Channon Brigade this week. A lightning strike, motor vehicle accident and a grass fire. A special thanks for the volunteers from our community and our neighboring brigades who have assisted with each callout.

Sometimes, as circumstances quickly unfold, community will step in before emergency services arrive, or Triple Zero is even called. Occasionally, like today, the quick action of good samaritans can prove to be very helpful & we’re grateful to the friendly locals who stepped up.

Discussions with paramedics after today’s MVA - where a casualty in shock was removed from the incident scene in a private vehicle - cautioned against such actions. Where the opportunity to do a qualified medical assessment is missed or delayed, the risk to the casualty increases.

We’re reassured to hear the driver has support on hand. Thanks to NSW Ambulance & Police for their response and patience today.

Part of the gear many RFS & FRNSW brigades use includes a TIC - Thermal Imaging Camera. It allows firefighters to check for and monitor hotspots. Whether searching through a roof cavity, looking for residual heat behind a wall or scanning dense vegetation around a vehicle accident for signs of life - the TIC has become a valuable brigade tool.

Last night’s car fire in Coffee Camp was difficult to extinguish, initially presenting as a hybrid with potential for thermal runaway to the first responders on scene. The TIC ultimately helped determine an all clear to safely remove the vehicle, while also confirming there were no missing occupants/ fire-setters in the immediate vicinity.

Glad we could support Goolmangar RFS on their patch. Gratitude to FRNSW HAZMAT & NSW Police (possible stolen vehicle) plus Stoney Chute RFS for attending.

Lastly a shout out to the tilt tray operator who was as fast on-scene as he was quick with his smartphone apps to ID the vehicle from a partial plate. Using the ANCAP Safety app to search tech specs., the engine series was identified, confirming the fuel type used on that vehicle model.

An excellent example of One Team, Many Players, One Purpose.

Third incident in 18hours for Nimbin RFS & many local volunteer fireys. 10 units responded this afternoon from Jiggi Valley, Stoney Chute, Nimbin, Dunoon, Hanging Rock, Blue K**b RFS & Group 3 Captain, suppressing fire & working the bambi bucket with Firebird 279 (fresh from the Ewingar & Sugarbag Rd Fires).

Fire was contained to the north side of Mountain Top Rd with no assets lost. Great effort from all who attended, plus a nod to Nimbin DC Zach Rook for establishing effective Fireground Control comms for this large strike force.

A special mention to Lismore City Council for installing the dedicated firefighting tanks at Lodge Rd X Mountain Top Rd, without which, attending brigades would not have gained the upper hand as fast as they did. Kudos where it’s due.

Busy night for Nimbin RFS volunteers. Two hours after closing one incident, a 4:32am pager dispached a handful of members from Nimbin, Dunoon, Clunes & Blue K**b brigades to a structure fire at Tuntable Creek. Good comms, (smoke) safety protocols & relay pumping coordination among the volunteer RFS units. FRNSW in attendance also. Residential asset not impacted, but outbuilding destroyed.

Some unfortunate disruption to NimFM’s early morning playlist, Community Centre tenancies & the public toilet lighting. Thanks to vigilance from local lads reporting an electrical power-pole fire & sparks through to Triple Zero & also to Essential Energy for doing what they could with an unconventional wiring rig.

Lismore City Council’s LEP identifies five Residential Zoned areas within the Nimbin Brigade area, including the village zone. RFS volunteers will no longer issue permits within those localities. Burning on residential zoned land is subject to the NSW Environment Protection Act, for which Council are the delegated authority.

Residents will need to apply through Council to obtain any permissions to burn anything more than a small, contained cooking &/or heating fire at that location. Industrially zoned properties also fall within the EPA
