A great precedent has been set today in the courts for protecting valuable social infrastructure from developers.

The City of Sydney and State Labor Government have offered to purchase the property from the developer, who evicted the boarding houses vulnerable tenants prior to the decision.

We need urgent planning reform to avoid the perverse situation where developers are able to remove affordable housing from the market to create space for luxury housing.

Rose Jackson Paul Scully MP City of Sydney

The boarding house, which became a refuge for low income earners after World War II, was purchased by LFD Developments who then served its residents with eviction orders last October.

Concerning news over the last week, that the RJ Williams Building on Glebe Point Road might be sold off to the private market for unaffordable apartments.

According to SMH, Wesley Mission, the charity that owns the site, has confirmed it’s walking away from plans to redevelop the crumbling building into 39 low-cost rentals for families.

The NSW Government is currently considering acquiring the project and Labor for Ending Homelessness strongly encourages it do so.

The $16.5 million project, backed by $3 million from the City of Sydney, would have capped rents at 30% of tenants’ incomes and housed nearly 100 residents

We are focused on making the Inner West affordable for all - young and old. We welcome the fact that Inner West Council is designing the development plan for this area, keeping it in the control of our local community.

However, we want to see more done to deliver both public and affordable housing in the Inner West.

That's why we've made the below submission as Party members to the Our Fairer Future Plan consultation.

The NSW government has announced that from May 19, its reforms including an end to no-grounds evictions and more rights for tenants with pets will come into force.

The reforms, announced in October, are the result of long-awaited promises by successive Labor leaders. Following caps on the frequency of rental increases which came into effect last year, Premier Chris Minns said the changes will cater to more than 2.2 million renters in NSW. The state also has at least 600,000 landlords.

“Today we are letting renters and owners know these major changes will begin in under two months’ time,” he said.

“By banning no-grounds evictions, this will give renters much-needed housing security. This will let them make a house a home.”

An end to no-grounds evictions has been promised by several Labor leaders. After much delay, the new rental reforms finally have a due date.

Today, I joined the Premier, Minister Scully, and Minister Jackson to announce 200 build-to-rent units at the former WestConnex site in Camperdown—offered at a discount to essential workers who keep our communities running. There will also be approximately 300 additional private and affordable units.

This is the land audit in action—unlocking space for much-needed housing, with approximately 7,000 new homes identified to date. Another big step by this government to build more homes for NSW.
