Navigating the National Disability Insurance Scheme (NDIS) can feel overwhelming, especially when you're trying to understand funding categories, service agreements, invoices, and plan reviews. Many participants receive an NDIS plan but aren't always sure how to maximize their funding and achieve their goals.
As a Support Coordinator and Social Worker, I've seen participants miss valuable opportunities simply because they weren't aware of how to use their plans effectively.
Here are my top 10 NDIS plan management tips to help you make the most of your funding and support your independence, wellbeing, and long-term goals.
1. Understand Your Funding Categories
One of the biggest mistakes participants make is not understanding what their funding can be used for.
Most NDIS plans include:
• Core Supports
• Capacity Building Supports
• Capital Supports
For example:
Sarah receives Core Supports funding but assumes she can only use it for personal care. After speaking with her Support Coordinator, she discovers she can also use some of her Core funding for community access and support worker assistance to attend social activities. Understanding your funding helps you make informed decisions and avoid missing out on supports that could improve your quality of life.
2. Set Clear Goals
Your NDIS funding is linked to your goals.
Ask yourself:
• What do I want to achieve?
• What challenges am I facing?
• What support will help me become more independent?
For example:
John's goal is to gain employment. Rather than using all of his supports for daily living assistance, he also accesses mentoring, employment preparation, and community participation supports that align with his goal. The clearer your goals, the easier it becomes to justify supports during plan reviews.
3. Keep Track of Your Budget
Many participants don't monitor their funding until it's nearly exhausted.
You should regularly review:
• Available funding
• Service bookings
• Monthly spending
• Remaining budget
For example:
A participant receives support coordination funding for a full year but uses most of it within six months due to multiple crises. Because spending wasn't monitored, they risk having no funding available when they need support later in the plan period. Tracking your budget helps avoid unexpected funding shortages.
4. Build a Strong Support Team
The right support team can significantly impact your outcomes.
Your team may include:
• Support Coordinator
• Recovery Coach
• Support Worker
• Occupational Therapist
• Psychologist
• Physiotherapist
• GP
For example:
Maria struggled with anxiety and isolation. Once her Support Coordinator connected her with a psychologist, support worker, and community group, her confidence and participation increased dramatically. Support works best when everyone works together toward common goals.
5. Use Support Coordination Effectively
Support Coordination is not just about referrals.
A good Support Coordinator can help you:
• Understand your plan
• Connect with services
• Resolve service issues
• Prepare for reviews
• Navigate crises
• Advocate for your needs
For example:
Following multiple hospital admissions, a participant required additional support worker hours and assistive technology. Their Support Coordinator gathered evidence, coordinated reports, and supported a successful Change of Circumstances request.
6. Keep Evidence of Your Needs
Evidence is essential for NDIS reviews and Change of Circumstances requests.
Helpful evidence may include:
• Medical reports
• Allied health reports
• Hospital discharge summaries
• Incident reports
• Functional assessments
For example:
A participant experiencing declining mobility was able to obtain assistive technology because their Occupational Therapist provided evidence demonstrating the impact on daily living activities. No evidence often means limited justification for additional funding.
7. Communicate Changes Early
Don't wait until your next review if your circumstances change significantly.
Examples include:
• Hospitalisation
• Mental health deterioration
• Increased support needs
• Loss of informal supports
• Changes in living arrangements
For example:
A participant's primary carer became seriously unwell. Because the change was reported promptly, additional supports were explored before the situation became critical. Early communication often leads to better outcomes.
8. Review Service Agreements Carefully
Always understand:
• Hourly rates
• Cancellation policies
• Travel charges
• Notice periods
• Service expectations
For example:
A participant unknowingly agreed to a provider charging significant cancellation fees. Reviewing the agreement beforehand could have prevented unnecessary expenses. Never feel pressured to sign without understanding the terms.
9. Prepare Early for Plan Reviews
Many participants only think about their review a few weeks before it occurs.
Instead:
• Review progress regularly
• Gather evidence throughout the year
• Record achievements and challenges
• Identify unmet needs
For example:
A participant maintained a simple journal documenting hospital admissions, support worker hours, and mental health challenges. This information became valuable evidence during their review. Preparation often leads to stronger outcomes.
10. Remember That the NDIS Is About Your Life
Funding is important, but the ultimate purpose of the NDIS is to help you live the life you want.
Ask yourself:
• Am I more independent?
• Am I more connected to my community?
• Am I achieving my goals?
• Am I improving my wellbeing?
For example:
One participant initially focused only on practical supports. Over time, they used their plan to join community groups, build friendships, improve confidence, and pursue meaningful activities.
The most successful plans focus on outcomes, not just services.
The NDIS can be life-changing when used effectively. Understanding your funding, building a strong support team, maintaining evidence, and planning ahead can help you maximise your opportunities and achieve meaningful outcomes.
Remember: your NDIS plan is not simply a budget, it's a tool to support your independence, wellbeing, participation, and future goals.
If you're unsure how to navigate your plan, don't be afraid to seek support and ask questions. The more informed you are, the more empowered you'll be to make decisions that support the life you want to live.
