I am saddened to hear of the passing of former Member for Hillarys, Peter Katsambanis.

Hillarys is an important part of the community I now have the privilege of representing as a Councillor, and I had the opportunity to meet and speak with Peter on a number of local issues during his time as the Member for Hillarys.

Although I was not a Councillor at the time, I appreciated Peter’s willingness to engage, listen and have conversations about matters affecting our local community. Those interactions gave me a genuine appreciation for his commitment to the people of Hillarys and the broader community he represented.

Peter dedicated many years to public service, both in Victoria and Western Australia, and that contribution deserves to be acknowledged and respected.

My thoughts are with his wife Karalee, their children, family, friends and all those who knew and worked with Peter throughout his years of public service.

Vale Peter Katsambanis. May he rest in peace.

As Father’s Day comes to a close, I hope all the dads, grandads, stepdads and father figures across our community have had a wonderful day.

For me, Father’s Day is a reminder that being a dad is often about the simple, everyday things, taking the kids to Sunday sport, sitting on the sidelines, helping with homework, cooking a family meal, heading out for a walk, having a laugh together, or simply being there when they need you.

It’s those everyday moments that often end up meaning the most.

Whether you spent today surrounded by family, enjoying a BBQ, catching up over a coffee, getting out and about in our beautiful community, or doing the usual Sunday sports run, I hope you’ve had the chance to enjoy some quality time with the people who matter most.

A big Happy Father’s Day to all the dads and father figures in our community. Thank you for everything you do, and hopefully you’ve managed to put your feet up for at least a little while!

🎶 Another Sunday Serenades sell-out and another very special afternoon at Redmond Theatre.

The second concert in the City of Joondalup 2026 Sunday Serenades series featured the extraordinary Tara Tiba, whose distinctive voice and musicianship brought together traditional Persian vocals with jazz, Latin and contemporary influences.

But what made hearing Tara perform even more special was learning a little about the journey that brought her back to the stage.

After a decade of debilitating illness, including seven years largely housebound and at times bedbound, Tara never imagined she would perform on stage again. To see her now sharing her extraordinary talent with audiences is a remarkable story of resilience, determination and a genuine love of music.

It was wonderful to join my fellow councillors Matthew Count & John Chester to see another sell-out crowd enjoying such a unique and powerful performance right here in Ocean Reef.

Congratulations to Tara and her band, and to everyone involved in making Sunday Serenades such a success. 👏

If you missed her at Sunday Serenades, Tara is also performing at The Ellington Jazz Club on August 29th. Having performed at venues and festivals around the world, including New York’s The Met and WOMADelaide, she is an artist well worth experiencing live.

🎤 Sometimes music is more than entertainment, it’s a story of culture, courage, resilience and connection.

And Sunday Serenades is certainly delivering all of that this year.

Celebrating Joondalup Business! 🥂
What a fantastic night celebrating our incredible local business community at the Joondalup Business Association Awards!

This year’s Awards were a sell-out, with over 250 people coming together to recognise the success, innovation and contribution of businesses right across our community.

Congratulations to all the finalists and award winners, your achievements are a wonderful reflection of the energy and entrepreneurial spirit that makes Joondalup such a great place to live, work and do business.

A special congratulations to The Good Company & Co named Joondalup Business of the Year, a fantastic achievement and a very worthy winner. 👏 The Good Company & Co is more than just a great café, it’s a business with a genuine social purpose, providing hospitality training and employment opportunities for adults with intellectual disability and autism.

It was also a particularly proud night for team JSO with the Joondalup Symphony Orchestra taking home the Education Industry Award. 🎶🏆

Education and development sit at the heart of JSO, through our Orchestra, Chorus and Intermezzo development ensemble, creating opportunities for musicians to learn, grow in confidence, perform and connect through live music.

A huge congratulations to JBA President Doreen Sharma, the JBA Board and the entire team for putting together another outstanding evening.

🎶 What a fantastic start to the 2026 Sunday Serenades season!
It was wonderful to see the series get underway at Redmond Theatre with an outstanding afternoon of piano from Joshua Noronha .

A previous City of Joondalup of Joondalup Young Musician of the Year winner and multiple prize-winner at national and international competitions, Joshua delivered a captivating performance featuring works by Rachmaninoff, Tchaikovsky, Chopin and Liszt.

It was a wonderful afternoon of exceptional music and a great way to launch another season of Sunday Serenades.

Congratulations to everyone involved in bringing this wonderful series to life, and thank you to everyone who came along to enjoy the local music performance.

I’m looking forward to seeing what the rest of the season has in store! 🎹🎶

There are some things in our community that are worth standing up for, and the Padbury Community Garden is one of them. 🌱🍒

So when we heard that a rare cherry tree had been stolen just one day after the volunteers had planted it, we wanted to do something to help.

Councillor Matthew Count, Rebecca Pizzey Central Ward, Councillor Russ Fishwick and I were more than happy to get our hands dirty. We sourced and donated a replacement cherry tree and some new gardening tools and spent the afternoon alongside the volunteers planting and securely staking it.

But honestly, the best part was spending time with some of the people behind this wonderful garden.

Every tree, plant and garden bed represents someone's time, effort and care. This is a place that has been built by local people, for local people, and you can really feel that when you visit.

To Sandy How, Brian J Omondi and all the volunteers: thank you for continuing to put so much into this special community space.

Today wasn't just about replacing a cherry tree. It was about showing our support and letting you know that what you're building here matters.

And I think the new tree is going to be very happy in its new home. 🍒🌳

It’s been a busy week at the Perth SkillsWest Careers & Employment Expo, where I’ve been based with my students as part of my day job in education.

As a Councillor, I also know how important it is that we create opportunities for young people in our community to explore their future, understand the pathways available to them and feel confident about taking that next step.

That’s why events like this are so valuable.

With more than 150 organisations and employers represented, the Expo brings together education and training providers, employers and industry experts, providing students, parents, teachers, graduates and job seekers with the chance to discover new career pathways, learn about emerging industries and explore the skills needed for the jobs of tomorrow.

There are also career information sessions, WorldSkills competitions, Try’a Skill Zones, construction and Defence career opportunities and plenty of free advice.

Today is the final day, and entry is FREE.

🎨 Joondalup's creative talent was on full display last night!

I had the pleasure of attending the City of Joondalup's 2026 Community Art Exhibition, one of the highlights of our local arts calendar and a wonderful celebration of the talented artists who help make our community so vibrant.

A huge congratulations to Harry Young, who has gone back-to-back, taking out the Most Outstanding Artwork Award with his stunning concrete sculpture, Remember Me. An outstanding achievement and thoroughly deserved.

🏆 Jessica Stricklan – Celebrating Joondalup Award for Space for Us

As many of you know, I'm a passionate supporter of arts and culture because I believe they play an important role in bringing communities together, inspiring creativity and enriching our city's identity. Events like this showcase the incredible talent we have right here in Joondalup and deserve our support.

On a personal not my wife and I were thrilled to have taken home Jane Hudson's vibrant acrylic painting, "Hey Good Looking", and, as the proud Councillor for the South-West Ward, I simply couldn't resist Clancy's beautiful acrylic work, "Sundown at Hillarys." There's something special about supporting local artists while bringing a unique piece of our community into your own home.

If you haven't visited the exhibition yet, I highly encourage you to do so. You might just discover your next favourite artwork and don't forget to cast your vote for the People's Choice Award while you're there.

Congratulations to 2024 City of Joondalup Musician of the Year winner Joshua Noronha a truly outstanding performance with the Metropolitan Symphony Orchestra,. His interpretations of Rhapsody in Blue and Rachmaninoff's Piano Concerto No. 2 were both technically impressive and deeply expressive, highlighting why he was such a deserving recipient of this prestigious award.

It was also fantastic to see a number of both past and present Joondalup Symphony Orchestra (JSO) members performing alongside MetSO. Seeing musicians contribute across multiple community orchestras is a wonderful reflection of the strength, collaboration and depth of Perth's vibrant classical music community.

🎼 It's always a pleasure to support local musicians and celebrate the incredible talent that continues to enrich our community through live performance.

🧊❄️ Freezin’ for a Reason! ❄️🧊
Yesterday it was fantastic to get down to Sorrento Quay, Hillarys Boat Harbour to support the Law Enforcement Torch Run -Western Australia 2026 Polar Plunge Hillarys. 🌊🥶

The Polar Plunge is a wonderful community event that raises awareness and funds to support athletes with intellectual disabilities through Special Olympics Western Australia. $30,000 was raised for athletes to participate in the National and State Games. 💦🥶💦🙌

Congratulations to everyone who took the icy leap, and to the organisers, volunteers, WA Law Enforcement Torch Run team, Hillarys Boardwalk and Hillarys Boat Harbour for bringing the community together once again.
