Over the past 12 months or so, the City of South Perth has seen an extraordinary turnover of elected members and senior governance personnel. This isn’t about personalities, factions or political differences. Healthy organisations can accommodate differing views.

The fact that six councillors have now either resigned or chosen not to return, together with the departure of numerous senior governance and legal staff, should give our community pause. It points to issues that are deeper and more entrenched than any disagreement between individuals.

Here you will see six former councillors have released a joint statement. We each reached our decisions independently, but we felt residents deserved to understand that there were common concerns about the governance environment and our ability to effectively serve the community.

My hope is that this statement helps shift the conversation away from personalities and towards the broader governance issues that need to be addressed. I remain grateful for the opportunity to have served our community and remain committed to advocating for transparency, accountability and good governance.

After careful consideration, I have today tendered my resignation as Councillor for the Como Ward at the City of South Perth.

My decision follows a lengthy period of reflection regarding the direction of the organisation, the effectiveness of its governance and the priorities reflected in the City’s most recent budget.

The recent budget was a significant factor in my decision. At a time when households and businesses continue to face cost-of-living pressures, residents are being asked to fund a substantial rates increase without, in my view, receiving a commensurate increase in services or meaningful action on the issues they consistently identify as priorities.

More broadly, I have become increasingly concerned about the governance environment within the organisation. During my term, and before it, residents have witnessed ongoing disputes, organisational instability, significant staff turnover and the resignation of multiple elected members.

Over recent months, it has become increasingly apparent to me that the culture within the Council chamber has deteriorated significantly. Since the 2025 local government elections, entrenched factionalism, disputes and an increasingly adversarial environment have made it difficult for councillors to work collaboratively and constructively in the best interests of the community.

While reasonable people may differ on the causes, I have reached the conclusion that I can no longer effectively influence outcomes from within the Council chamber.

I was elected to represent my community and to advocate for transparency, accountability and practical outcomes. While I remain proud of many of the initiatives I supported during my time on Council, I believe the time has come for me to pursue those objectives through other avenues.

This resignation should not be interpreted as a withdrawal from public life. My commitment to South Perth and to public service remains unchanged. However, I now feel I can do more good outside of the Council than within it.

I thank the residents who placed their trust in me and the many community members who have supported me throughout my time.

Vale William “Bill” Grayden OAM

It is with great sadness that I acknowledge the passing of Bill Grayden – a man whose life was defined by service, integrity, and an unwavering commitment to community.

Bill’s contribution to South Perth, and to Western Australia more broadly, is difficult to put into words. He served his community in so many ways over many decades, always with a quiet determination to make things better for others. His legacy is not just in what he did, but in how he did it – with humility, generosity, and a genuine care for people.

I had the privilege of meeting Bill at pre-poll last year. It was something I had hoped to do for some time, knowing he had good days and bad. When he came out, I was struck by his presence – warm, thoughtful, and deeply engaged. It is a moment I will always remember.

In a world where there is often a lot of noise, Bill’s life reminds us of something far more important: the value of simply showing up, rolling up your sleeves, and giving back. Not for recognition, but because it matters.

His example has given me a renewed appreciation for what it means to serve a community. It is not always easy, and it is not always understood, but it is always worthwhile.

If there is one way we can honour Bill’s legacy, it is this: find a way to contribute. Whether it’s through volunteering, supporting a local organisation, helping a neighbour, or simply being present – our communities are stronger when people step forward.

My thoughts are with Bill’s family and all those who had the privilege of knowing him.

Rest in peace, Bill. Your legacy will endure.

Australia Day on the South Perth Foreshore 🇦🇺

It was a privilege to attend the Australia Day Citizenship Ceremony hosted by the City of South Perth on our beautiful foreshore.

The morning began with the raising of the Australian flag, followed by a moving Welcome to Country and a wonderful performance by the Baha’i Choir, setting the tone for a citizenship ceremony that was inclusive, respectful and deeply meaningful.

Australia Day is a time to reflect on who we are as a nation, acknowledging our shared history, celebrating our diversity, and welcoming new citizens who now proudly call Australia home.

Thank you to everyone involved in delivering such a warm and thoughtful event, and congratulations to our newest Australian citizens.

Thank you to the volunteers, frontline workers, small businesses and community groups who give so much throughout the year — often quietly and without recognition.

I hope this Christmas brings rest, connection and joy for you and your loved ones. Please stay safe over the holiday period.

Last week we raised a glass with our outgoing and incoming Councillors. It was a moment to honour those who have served our community with dedication, and to warmly welcome those stepping into their new roles.

I’m genuinely excited for the future of our Council. With fresh perspectives, continued experience, and a shared commitment to our community, there is so much good work ahead of us.

Here’s to collaboration, stability, and delivering positive outcomes for the City of South Perth. 🌟

It is with great sadness that I acknowledge the passing of John Hardwick OAM, former Mayor, Councillor, and Honorary Freeman of the City of South Perth, who passed away on 9 November 2025.

John made an extraordinary contribution to our community. His vision and leadership helped shape so much of what we value in the City today, including his role in facilitating the City’s purchase of the May and Herbert Gibbs art collection. His dedication to civic life, and his deep care for people, left an enduring mark on our City.

On behalf of the community, I extend my sincere condolences to John’s family and loved ones. His wisdom, service, and friendship will be long remembered.

Vale John Hardwick OAM.
