The Equal Opportunity Commission invites the community to pause this National Reconciliation Week and reflect on what it means to be “all in” for respect, fairness and inclusion.

Each year from 27 May to 3 June, Australians mark National Reconciliation Week. This week reflects significant moments in our shared history, beginning on the anniversary of the 1967 referendum and concluding on the anniversary of the High Court’s Mabo decision.

National Reconciliation Week is a time to learn about our shared histories, cultures and achievements, and to consider how each of us contributes to reconciliation in our everyday lives. It also invites us to reflect on progresses made, how change is shaped by collective effort, and how equality is experienced in practice.

Today we acknowledge the Stolen Generations and the ongoing impact of forced removal on Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander peoples.

Sorry matters. Action matters more.

Turning words into action means addressing the discrimination and racism that continue to shape lived experience. In Western Australia, the Equal Opportunity Act protects against racial discrimination and harassment.

Our role is to ensure these protections are lived, not just written.

What does it mean to feel safe to be yourself at work, in education, and in public life? IDAHOBIT invites us to reflect.

Each year on 17 May, communities across Western Australia and around the world mark IDAHOBIT, the International Day Against LGBTQIA+ Discrimination.

This date reflects a significant global turning point. On 17 May 1990, the World Health Organization removed homos*xuality from its list of mental disorders. It was a recognition of a simple but important truth: diversity in s*xual orientation is not a flaw or illness. Discrimination, not s*xual orientation, is the source of harm.

More than thirty years on, IDAHOBIT remains an important moment for reflection.

The Equal Opportunity Commission recognises that Mother’s Day may be experienced in many different ways across our diverse community. For some, it is a time of celebration and connection. For others, it may bring reflection, grief, loss, longing, or mixed emotions. Experiences of motherhood, caregiving, family, culture, identity, and relationships are deeply personal and diverse, and we acknowledge these varied experiences with care, respect, and inclusion.

Mother’s Day is an opportunity to honour mothers and mother figures by recognising the diversity of motherhood and the many attributes, identities and lived experiences that interconnect to shape it.

Every year on the last Wednesday of April, International Guide Dog Day celebrates the extraordinary partnership between people who are blind or have low vision and their guide dogs. It also marks the founding of the International Guide Dog Federation in 1989 and recognises the vital role guide dogs play in supporting people to live and participate fully in their communities.

While guide dogs are expertly trained and highly skilled, true independence depends on more than their training alone. It relies on communities, services and transport providers understanding and meeting their legal responsibilities ...

✨Our latest article explains why understanding the law around guide and hearing dogs is so important 👉check out our link in our bio.

Discrimination is when someone treats you unequally, or worse than other people, because of who you are. The law protects you from discrimination based on certain things about you that you can't change, which are called grounds. Some of the grounds that are protected include your race, s*x, age, disability, s*xual orientation, religion, and many more.

✨You can find a full list of the grounds covered by the law in Western Australia, and the areas where they are protected, on our website by clicking the link in our bio ✨

It is against the law under the Equal Opportunity Act 1984 (WA) to s*xually or racially harass someone at work, in an education setting or in accommodation settings (like renting).

Sexual harassment can take many forms including, but not limited to:
🛑Unwelcome physical touching, hugging or kissing
🛑Staring at someone or at parts of their body
🛑Suggestive comments or jokes
🛑Insults or taunts based on s*x
🛑Sexually explicit pictures, e-mails or messages
🛑Intrusive questions about a person’s private life or body
