Today we remember Queen Elizabeth II and more than seventy years of service to Australia.

On 8 September 2022, Her Majesty Queen Elizabeth II passed away at Balmoral.

In announcing her death to Australians, then Governor-General David Hurley reflected on a Queen remembered for her dignity, compassion, dedication, work ethic and unwavering commitment to the people she served.

For Australia, Elizabeth II was our Queen through seven decades of national transformation. Governments changed, Prime Ministers came and went, and Australia continued to develop as a confident and independent nation.

Throughout that change, the Crown provided constitutional continuity above everyday political competition.

Her Majesty visited Australia 16 times, travelled to every state and territory and met Australians from communities across the country.

Her reign demonstrated a simple but important principle of constitutional monarchy: service before politics and continuity through change.

Today, Australians for Constitutional Monarchy remembers Her late Majesty with gratitude.

📻 Monthly catch-up with Heritage FM!

It was great to join the team at Heritage FM for my monthly radio interview and have the opportunity to talk about what’s happening across the Shire of Serpentine Jarrahdale.

We covered a range of topics, including advocacy for our community, the ongoing work to get our roads fixed and improved, and some of the issues that matter to local residents.

And, of course, we couldn’t finish without a bit of discussion about the Fremantle Dockers! 💜⚓

The history of Australia’s flag is also part of Australia’s constitutional history.

Following the 1901 flag competition, King Edward VII approved the designs of the Australian Blue Ensign and the Australian Red Ensign. That approval was formally announced in the Commonwealth of Australia Gazette on 20 February 1903.

Half a century later, the Australian Parliament passed the Flags Act 1953, formally declaring and describing the Australian National Flag.

There is an important constitutional detail in that story.

The Bill was reserved for the Queen’s pleasure, and Queen Elizabeth II gave her assent on 14 February 1954, during her first Australian Royal Tour. The Act was signed into law after Her Majesty had opened the Australian Parliament.

It is a useful example of Australia’s constitutional monarchy in practice.

Parliament legislates. The Crown acts through established constitutional processes. National institutions develop through law, convention and responsible government.

The story of the Australian National Flag is therefore not separate from Australia’s constitutional history.

It is part of it.
