Quote of the year goes to our member Tom Begić in Guardian Australia article today, about how we see what we do. We are just one small part of a much bigger team of volunteers who bring their different skills and experience to emergency services, no matter what colour uniform we wear. (And for the record Tom, you’re not a w*nker 😉)

When a missing person strays into ‘tiger country’, the call goes out to the volunteers from the NSW State Emergency Service’s specialist BSAR unit

We like to keep our volunteers on their training toes, so last weekend we conducted our 2025 Canyon SAREX at Mount Wilson in the Blue Mountains.

Over 2 days, our 4 search teams (3 x canyon teams, 1 x land search team) worked to find and care for 2 x 'injured party' teams requiring first aid and other assistance in remote and challenging canyon terrain, including overnighting inside a canyon.

As always it was outstanding to work with our colleagues in NSW SES Blue Mountains, NSW Ambulance Special Operations, with the support of NSW Rural Fire Service (Mt Wilson) and NSW National Parks and Wildlife Service.

The exercise tested all of our capabilities including being adaptable and ready to respond at any time, as one of our teams came across a 'no duff' suspected broken ankle from a member of the public in Wollangamble 1. This grew our team with the addition of Blue Mountains Police Rescue - NSW Police Force and NSW Ambulance Aeromedical.

Thank you to all who assisted and participated. See you next year!

We are (almost) lost for words with happiness at the great outcome for Hadi, his family and friends. The words we do have are massive thanks to the one orange team across all NSW SES units, with huge nods to NSW SES - Snowy River Unit, NSW SES Alpine Search and Rescue Unit, NSW SES Khancoban, NSW SES - Tumut Unit, NSW SES South Eastern Zone, and everyone who travelled from out of area (as far as Newcastle, Sydney Metro, South Coast, et al). Orange is just one colour of the rescue family, that stretched this week to include NSW Police Force Rescue & Bomb Disposal - NSW Police Force PolAir - NSW Police Force Aviation Command NSW Ambulance VRA Rescue NSW VRA Rescue NSW - Cave Rescue Squad NSW National Parks and Wildlife Service NSW Rural Fire Service and many more.
