On Saturday we exhibited 12 goats at the 150th Stanthorpe Show. I was proud of all of them. It was a huge show with hundreds of goats on the grounds for both the AAMBGS show and the BGBAA National show.

As happens often when growing goats, they hit some awkward growth stages just as you plan to take them out.

Bronte, the 7 month old caramel doeling pictured here went from very stocky a few weeks prior, to looking like I'd stretched her legs. At least her back stayed level and the judge still really liked her and saw past the growth stage. She was awarded the Champion doeling in the 6-12 month class. Her half sister Tinkerbell (not pictured) won the 0-6 month doeling class.

Golden Valley Matilda also impressed the judge, despite being a little lighter in build than usual owing to just weaning triplets. She's a little long in the leg and the judge would have preferred her to have more of an angle in her hind legs, but overall she looked good. That is a Nigerian Dwarf pictured in the background, for those who are wondering.

Giovanni was just himself - sporting his distinctive musky fragrance and stained front legs that he has worked so hard to achieve. He was a little tired, having spent all of Friday night chatting up the does in the surrounding pens and keeping the humans awake.

Every Pygmy class we entered was well supported with plenty of entries which is encouraging for the future interest in the breed, but also far more satisfying than when you find yourself in a class with only a few other goats.

Overall it was a busy, fun weekend. The goats performing well was just a bonus.

We had a fun, successful weekend at the AABMGS Christmas Show at Kalbar this weekend.

I was proud of all of my goats and was impressed that there were good numbers of goats in all of the Pygmy classes. I didn't take many photos, but this is Narion Giovanni just before he won the Junior Pygmy Buck (age 1-3) class and then the Junior Buck class (across all breeds). The second picture is Golden Valley Pippi Longstocking. It was her first show and she won her age class as well as Champion doe class, but most importantly she was so sweet and well behaved on what was her first time away from her mum.

The third photo is Golden Valley Bronte and Golden Valley Clover looking exhausted in their show pen.

One of the most exciting parts of the weekend was brining home our new buckling Buccanwood Tonka. He's only 8 weeks old but I'm full of hope for his future. He brings some bloodlines that we don't have that will compliment our two beautiful bucks Narion Giovanni and Narion Thomas. He also has a very gentle, cooperative temperament and he's very handsome. Welcome home Tonka! Thank you Claire Pearson from Buccanwood Pygmy Goats for trusting me with your gorgeous well bred buckling.

2025 kidding season

Of 9 does in kid 6 have already kidded and there are still 3 to go. From the 6 we had one single, two sets of triplets and 3 sets of twins, so 13 kids in total. 10 out of 13 have been doelings.

I've not taken many photos, but I've attached a few.

Most of my herd is traditional US pygmy colours. Since Australian Pygmy goats are most often crossed with other breeds - a necessity since the genetic pool here would have been too small to produce healthy animals, most Australian breed standards allow for colours outside of the range permitted in the US. The requirement of a cobby build with correct conformation is the same, and the height must fall within a specific range.

I like most of my herd to be the traditional US pygmy colours, but I have a few that I breed that are wild, non-traditional colours just for fun. I keep pygmy goats for enjoyment after all. You can often change colour back in only one generation if you want to, but it's much harder to fix conformation.

I think my best doelings this season are Bronte (carmel P64.6%, my lowest % so far but best conformation) and Scout (black P75.5%) - whatever colour they were I would like them and I will keep both. All of this years kids are adorable, but I'll have to part with some of them. Late in the year I will also have low to mid percentage does available.

At long last I can introduce everyone to Tinkerbell. She was born 2 weeks ago and even though she was full term, her two sisters were taking up her growing space and she was born too small. They were each nearly twice her size. Tinkerbell weighed just 700g. She has now doubled in weight and is very strong.

Tinkerbell is 72.4% pygmy. Aside from her ears still looking a bit curly, she's looking great and full of energy. She is living in the house, but going out for a play in the paddock with her sisters for half an hour each day. Her legs were a bit bendy, but they've straightened up with a bit of physio each day and she now stands up straight.

Her two sisters are pictured as well. They are calm friendly girls despite being dam raised and me not being able to spend as much time with them as I'd like.

Disclaimer: I'm not usually one to dress up my animals, but a good friend looked after Tinkerbell for a day while I was at work and she gave her a beautiful crocheted strawberry hat to wear, and I confess that it does look rather sweet in a ridiculous way.

My favourite little doeling so far this season is Brontë. She would have liked to have been born in Morocco where she could climb trees all day. If there are no trees she also climbs people.
