Trawool members have been out collecting for the Good Friday Appeal today as part of the Seymour District collection.

A 95 year old Good Friday tradition, The Good Friday Appeal raises funds to enable The Royal Children’s Hospital in Melbourne to provide world class care to our children.

The Fire Danger Period for both Mitchell Shire Council and Murrindindi Shire Council will be lifted as of 1am Monday 30th March.

There may still be days of elevated fire danger risks outside of the FDP, and everyone is encouraged to check the fire danger and local municipal laws around burning off, and register any burns.

Planning a camping trip this Labour Day long weekend? Conditions have begun to cool a tad, but before you toast marshmallows over a campfire, there are a few things to keep in mind.

🏕️ Check if the park allows campfires at www.parks.vic.gov.au or call 13 19 63.

🔥 Check the Fire Danger Ratings and Total Fire Bans via the VicEmergency app or at www.cfa.vic.gov.au.

📱 Create a watch zone for your destination on the VicEmergency app.

👀 Never leave a fire unattended, even for a short time. Make sure an adult is always present, within 50m and has a clear line of sight of the fire.

💧 Fully extinguish your campfire with at least 10 litres or several buckets of water every time you leave the site, even if it’s for a short time. If a fire is cool to the touch, it is safe to leave.

🚒On Tuesday 17th Feb at 1217hrs, Trawool Brigade received a page for a column of smoke issuing from a property on the GV Hwy, Trawool. As members were responding to the station, we could see the smoke building, and quickly called for additional resources. Soon after arriving on scene, we were supported by neighboring Brigades, Forest Fire Management Victoria, and aircraft from Kestrel Aviation.

Two weeks later, after recent rainfall and the fire declared Under Control, it has been handed over to Trawool Brigade for local response and management.

We want to thank Forest Fire Management Victoria, Kestrel Aviation, Rapid Relief Team AU, Victoria Salvation Army Emergency Services, Victoria Police and so many others, for coming together as a team, to bring this fire under control. A special big thanks to the BC Wildfire Service crews from Canada, for being in Vic assisting with the fires already this summer, and coming to help us at Trawool, and to Medical Edge Australia for their medical care of all on the fireground.

To our neighbouring CFA (Country Fire Authority) Brigades for their ongoing support, for lending us your FCV (command vehicle) Seymour Fire Brigade, and Slip On/Ultralight Strath Reedy Creek CFA, and to all the many, many others - we cannot possibly capture you all, but we see you and appreciate you all.💐🇦🇺🇨🇦

🔥🌧️ Out of the flames… not quite out of the woods. 🌧️🔥

The Trawool fire has now been listed as Contained - which is great progress and a credit to crews and the community.

We’ll share a more detailed update soon about the fire’s impact and properly acknowledge everyone who contributed to the response. But right now, our focus shifts to the next challenge.

Heavy rain is forecast over fire-affected areas - because of course it is - and burnt landscapes don’t exactly behave themselves in wet weather.

With vegetation reduced, water runs off quickly. That can mean:

- Flash flooding
- Mud, ash and debris across roads
- Fire-damaged trees coming down
- Slippery tracks and unstable ground
- Localised landslides on steeper terrain

So while we’re no longer managing flame spread, we are now managing weather impacts.

Different hazard. Same need to stay switched on.

Avoid unnecessary travel during heavy rain, never drive through floodwater, and keep clear of active fireground areas.

Rain and thunderstorms are forecast across Victoria today with some areas likely to see locally heavy falls up to 60mm. More rain is expected next week.

In areas recently impacted by bushfire, even moderate rainfall can cause dangerous conditions including flash flooding, debris flow, falling trees and landslides. Burnt ground does not absorb water well, so runoff can happen quickly and without warning.

For your safety:
🚫 Avoid the fire area. Conditions can change quickly and roads and tracks can become slippery.
🚗 Never walk or drive through floodwaters. Even shallow water can be dangerous and conditions can change quickly.
⚠️Stay alert, stay informed and keep clear of fire affected landscapes during this rainfall event. If you’re travelling, check emergency and road updates.

For anyone seeking updates

A community meeting for the Trawool fire will be held at the Strath Creek Public Hall, this Saturday 21 February at 10am.

Fire agencies and incident management staff will provide an overview of the current situation, anticipated situation over the coming days, community actions and what you can do to stay informed.

This meeting will not be livestreamed.
