What an amazing day! Sunday we opened the station’s doors and welcomed our Highton community for our Get Fire Ready Open Day. 🚒

More than 160 people came along throughout the day, with our volunteers having detailed fire safety conversations with over 100 people about getting themselves, their homes and their families ready for summer.

From checking out the trucks and having a go with the hose, to colouring in and enjoying a BBQ, it was fantastic to see so many families through the station.

Most importantly, we hope everyone left with a little more knowledge and confidence about being fire ready this summer.

A huge thank you to everyone who came along, supported the brigade and had a chat with our volunteers. And of course, a massive thank you to our volunteers who helped make the day happen.

Grassfires in Highton’s built-up area are thankfully quite rare, however not impossible.

A couple weeks ago, our volunteers along with Fire Rescue Victoria responded to reports of a grass fire in the Barrabool Hills area, finding a mulch area near a car park on fire. Crews worked quickly to extinguish the blaze.

While grassfires may be less common in built-up areas, they can still start and spread quickly, particularly during hot, dry and windy conditions.

When a there is a grassfire, it is recommended that if you are next to a grass fire when it starts, walk back two streets back from the fire. Don’t drive.

If you live more than two streets away, stay where you are and monitor conditions. It is unlikely the grassfire will spread beyond the first row of houses.

As the cooler months end, it's time to get ready for bushfire season. Look over your bushfire plan so you know what to do and set aside time to prepare. Even if you plan to leave early, getting your property ready can improve its chances of surviving a fire.

Today, we at Highton Fire Brigade along with the rest of CFA, mark National Police Remembrance Day.

Today we mark National Police Remembrance Day, a time to pause and honour those who have given their lives in the line of duty.

We remember their service and recognise the impact of their loss on their families, friends and colleagues.

We are incredibly proud to work alongside our police colleagues every single day, and we acknowledge their commitment and courage as they protect our communities.

🔥 Home Fire Safety Visits 🔥

Following a recent house fire in our area, our volunteers have been out in the community conducting Home Fire Safety Visits to support residents and help improve household fire safety.

Over the past two days, 4 of our amazing volunteers have been door‑knocking across Highton to chat with locals, offer safety advice, check smoke alarms, and provide essential fire‑safety equipment where needed.

Here’s what we achieved:
🏡 Properties visited: 66
👥 People engaged: 76
🔥 Fire blankets provided: 28
🔔 Smoke alarms installed: 2 (Everyone else’s were working and not older than 10 years!)

As a reminder, working smoke alarms save lives. CFA recommends:
🔔 Test your smoke alarms monthly
🧹 Clean them at least once a year (to clear dust and keep sensors effective)
♻️ Replace every 10 years, regardless of how they appear to be working

These visits are all about helping our community stay safe. Simple measures—like having a working smoke alarm or keeping a fire blanket in the kitchen—can make a huge difference in an emergency.

A big thank you to the residents who took the time to chat with us. Your willingness to engage helps strengthen the safety and resilience of our community.
