A Certified Practising Accountant (CPA) is a finance, accounting and business professional with a specific qualification. Being a CPA is a mark of high professional competence. It indicates a soundness in depth, breadth and quality of accountancy knowledge. It provides members with an internationally recognised qualification as well as the opportunity to complete specialist training and continuing professional development (CPD). To use the CPA designation, a member must:

- complete a degree or a postgraduate award recognised by CPA Australia
- complete the CPA Program, including three years of professional experience in finance, accounting or business
- undertake CPD activities each year
- comply to a strict code of conduct set by CPA Australia. To offer public accounting services, CPAs must also complete CPA Australia's Public Practice Program and hold a Public Practice Certificate in accordance with the CPA Australia's By-Laws. Find out more at cpaaustralia.com.au

Recent high-profile breaches of confidentiality in the accounting sector have many accountants reviewing their own confidentiality procedures. 🔒

“The rules around confidentiality are strong,” says Neville Birthisel FCPA, Policy Adviser, Regulations and Standards, CPA Australia.

As firms increasingly adopt AI-enabled software, engage third-party providers and move to anti-money laundering and counter-terrorism financing (AML/CTF) obligations, practitioners face a growing range of confidentiality risks.

Practitioners who breach confidentiality obligations may face disciplinary action from CPA Australia, as well as sanctions from the Tax Practitioners Board (TPB), which is responsible for ensuring compliance with the Tax Agent Services Act 2009 (TASA). Other statutory obligations such as the Tax Admin Act have criminal penalties for breaching taxpayer secrecy. ⚖️

✨ Advancing the Future of the Profession in Indonesia

CPA Australia was privileged to participate in CPA Days, organised by the Indonesian Institute of Certified Public Accountants (IAPI), where Mr Gavan Ord, CPA Australia's Lead, Business Investment and International, addressed an audience of more than 160 professionals on "The Future of Accounting and Finance: Key Trends and Implications for Accountants."

The session explored the transformative forces reshaping the profession, including technology adoption, evolving business models, and the growing strategic role of finance professionals.⚡

Building on these important conversations, CPA Australia also co-hosted a joint executive leadership session with CFO Club Indonesia and supported by Robert Walters Indonesia that brought together close to 60 senior members from both organisations. At the session, "Future-Ready Businesses: Building the Skills to Grow in the Age of AI and Technology", Gavan shared insights from CPA Australia's Asia-Pacific Small Business Survey, highlighting the capabilities and leadership skills organisations need to remain competitive in a rapidly changing environment. 👥

To engage a broader audience, CPA Australia recorded a series of podcast discussions featuring leading industry figures. These included Dr Adi Budiarso FCPA (Aust.), Chief Executive for Financial Services Technology Innovation, Digital Financial Assets and Crypto Assets at Indonesia’s Financial Services Authority (OJK), who discussed “Financial Technology Regulation: Keeping Pace with a Fast-Moving Sector”, and Mr Brian Indradjaja FCPA (Aust.), Indonesia Leader and President Director of PT Deloitte Konsultan Indonesia, who shared insights on “The Application of Artificial Intelligence in Auditing and Its Implications for the Profession”.

In addition, Mr Janoearto Alamsyah, Executive Director of the ASEAN Federation of Accountants (AFA), hosted a podcast conversation with Gavan on “Business Dynamism and the Future of Work: Navigating Economic Change and AI”.

Beyond these thought leadership engagements, the visit also provided an opportunity to connect with idsMED Aesthetics Indonesia, a CPA Australia Recognised Employer Program (REP) partner.

🌟 CPA Australia had a productive week in Indonesia, strengthening our commitment to supporting the nation's development through policy dialogue, advocacy and thought leadership.

Led by Gavan Ord, CPA Australia’s Business Investment and International Lead, a key highlight was our joint Focus Group Discussion with Indonesia's Financial Services Authority (OJK) and United In Diversity Indonesia on Cybersecurity and Governance for Digital Assets and Transactions.👥

Bringing together around 25 stakeholders, the discussion explored governance, accountability and regulatory clarity, cyber resilience and incident readiness, and ways to strengthen supervisory capacity and market readiness.

The insights shared will help inform discussions on building a secure, resilient and trusted digital assets ecosystem in Indonesia.⚡

We also co-hosted the Indonesia-Australia Executive Business & Finance Dialogue 2026 with the Indonesian Institute of Accountants (IAI) and the ASEAN Federation of Accountants (AFA), bringing together business and finance leaders from Indonesia and Australia to discuss how finance leadership can help build more resilient businesses. 📈

Moderated by Gavan, the dialogue explored strategic decision-making, the evolving role of CFOs and finance leaders, the impact of AI and digital transformation on the workforce, governance and risk management, and the importance of professional capability development and cross-border collaboration.🤖
